I've been advised that one-tenth the number of daily calories should be Protein grams. That is to say, if you're eating 1000 calories a day of food, you should have 100 grams of Protein. (100 is one-tenth of 1000.) If you eat 1200 calories per day, then shoot for 120g of protein.

I don't know if there is a maximum, but I've been told protein needs time to be absorbed into the system, and excess is eliminated through body waste. So if you plan to eat 100g of protein per day, break it up into several meals - don't have it all at once. I try to have 20-30g of protein per meal, several times a day.

My booklet from the program coordinator says women should shoot for 60-80 grams a day, and men 70-90 grams. :)

Same as above, that's what we were taught.

They asked me today how much Protein I was getting a day?

I said 60-80G a day.

They were Happy with that.

Same here - at least 60. A friend in Florida told me that we required that much in order to keep our hair/nails healthy.

I'm doing minimum 60 from a combination of shakes, eggs, meat and Beans. I work 10 hours a day so I always take 2 shakes (60 g protein) with me, just in case.

At least 60 for women, higher if you're a man. I eat no less than 120g a day. There is no maximum and you can eat as much Protein as you'd like in a meal (keeping your calorie limit in mind). It does not go to waste, despite what many think/say.

Hey Reverie,

I know you have been asked this a million times but can you give an example of what you would eat in any givin day to reach 120g a day? Thanks

What I eat varies a lot per day, but I stick to chicken, turkey, fish (tilapia/salmon), shrimp, and lean beef (90/10). I also eat a lot of greek yogurt, light yogurt sometimes, Protein bread, cheese, and fat free milk. Sometimes cottage cheese but not much anymore.

It must be Liquid Protein grams I'm thinking of. The way it was explained was that if it's too much, the excess is passed out before being absorbed. That makes more sense than dense Proteins being eliminated. Or is it maybe with bypass people? They have malabsorption issues.

Goes for all types of Protein lol. Liquid Protein is the same protein you find in chicken and other dense foods. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
