Pre op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what all the different pre op diets are, for how long you need to be on them and do all doctors use them?

I heard about the Protein Drinks and from different ones I've spoken to, it doesn't seem easy to find one that tastes decent ! UGGHunsure.gif

I'm right there with you on this topic. I started the lap band process back in April and the liquid diet thing is a significant source of anxiety for me. I seem to have an aversion to the canned drinks and trying new foods in general. I have yet to even try a canned Protein supplement.

My surgeon requires a two week pre-op diet to shrink the liver. His diet is liquids only - Carnation Instant Breakfast 4 to 6 times a day. He also said I could substitute Protein shakes for some of the servings. I do find the Protein Shakes a good way to satisfy hunger and carb/sweet cravings.

Initially, I went to GNC and purchased a big container of Abilify Protein powder. It was so awful. I would just drink it as fast as I could, followed by a bunch of Water.

A good friend, who has already had the surgery, recommended powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury brand. I believe this is only available online - www.unjury.com, but pricing is reasonable. They have two chocolate flavors that I mix with skim milk. These taste pretty good to me - I have no trouble drinking them at all. They also have a chicken Soup flavor. Much like Lipton Cup of Soup. This is ok - not great. You can only heat it to 130 degrees F, so it's sort of lukewarm soup. They have a starter kit which includes a shaker bottle and individual packets of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, unflavored and chicken. You can mix the unflavored in any kind of food or drink, as long as it's not too hot. I haven't tried a lot of variations yet. I'm just sticking with the chocolate that I know I like. Right now, I'm only drinking 1 - 2 shakes a day as part of my nutrition plan, but I'm sure I will need more variety once these are my only food intake.

My family doctor's nurse has also had the LapBand procedure. She recommends EAS, which you can buy at almost any store - even Wal-Mart. She said Muscle Milk light is good, too. I have not tried these yet. EAS has the pre-packaged and the powdered.

Best of luck to you.

I seem to hear of more people with the problem of finding decent tasting mixes then actually getting good tasting drinks. I am sure there must be a few around that you can buy in small containers to try rather than those gigantic barrels they seem to come in. If I could find one that tasted great mixing it with fruit or coffee or some kind of flavoring I would be ecstatic. The $ being wasted now is ridiculous but I'm trying to get a head start so when I have to drink it I am prepared and not getting sick and starving at the same time. Maybe I will give the EAS a try, Thanks

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
