For Those Who Have Been Banded for about 1 Year

Recommended Posts

Pre-bander, here!

Just wondering how much weight you have lost in one year.

Some are trying to convince me to get the RNY because "you lose weight so much quicker."

I don't mind losing slowly; in fact, I prefer that.

BUT--I'd like to at least lose 40-50lbs in a year. If it takes me two-three years to get to goal--so be it.

What's the most you've lost in one year--the least?

Thanks!!!!

I'm down about 75 pounds in a year. :clap2: I can't be happier with my results. I still have about 25 more to go, but slow and steady wins the race, right? :)

The band AVERAGE is 50-100lbs the first year. This all has to do with what choices you make, food-wise, the exercise you choose to do and the amount of Water you are willing to get in every day. Of course, you're own metabolism plays a huge role also and any medications you take could have some effect on your weight loss also. Mostly, it's up to you and your choices. :)

I am 10 months and have lost 34 pounds. Talk about slow. Realistically, I could lose another 16 pounds in 2 months, making it an even 50 for the year. Hey, that's a great mini-goal! Thanks! Anyhow, like you, I don't mind slow, but the green-eyed-monster burns my a$$ occasionally at quick weight loss, banded or RNY!

If you don't mind slow, and appreciate doing the hard work yourself, including the head work! then banding is a good option.

Hey, I am clueless about French...what does your sig say? (is it even French?!)

Kathy--

34lbs in 10 months is still not bad--I was always told that 1/2 lb to 2 lbs. per week is the best way to lose weight. 34lbs. puts you at above 1/2 lb. per week--more like .85 lb per week--almost 1 pound per week.

To me, that's great!!!

Yes, it is French. :)

I'm down about 103# just 15 months post-op but I've plateaued for the last 3 months. I got lazy and learned too well how to eat around the band for the holidays. But I'm back on track and hopefully will start to see my scale moving in the right direction again!

My surgeon told me that the average band weight loss is 8 pounds per month. That is about 96 pounds in a year, if you are average. Some work harder, some just lose slower.

But I'm with Jack on this one. It shouldn't be which way can you lose faster, it should be health. With the band you have a minimal invasive surgery which can be reversed if you change your mind. With the RNY, youre stuck for life with what you get. The eating and digesting problems, the super rapid weight loss that leaves many sick with saggy skin and looking very old. And then there's the mortality rate of RNYs. Geesh. My surgeon told us that there is no other surgery he performs that has anywhere near the mortality rate as the RNY. One more interesting fact.. the US is the only country that still does the bypass surgeries. All of the other countries have stopped because of the serious risks involved. Top that off with the stats that are showing RNY patients begin to gain the weight back after a few years and you have a huge red flag in my mind.

Even though I see some with erosion or infection problems, there is a huge majority out there that have no problems at all and see excellent and lasting results with the band. Ive only been banded 3 weeks, so Im just a baby at this, but there's no doubt in my mind which is the better, safer, smarter choice, and I don't mind speaking out about it to anyone who will listen.

Best of luck to you! :(

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
