Looking for people in NYC willing to be interviewed about weight loss surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am a doctoral student at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and am doing my dissertation on the experience of having had weight loss surgery.

If you have had weight loss surgery or are considering it, are between the ages of 18 and 65 years old, and live in the greater New York City area, I would love to interview you about your experiences of and opinions about obesity and weight loss surgery. Whether you had weight loss surgery over a decade ago or have just set your surgery date, I am interested in hearing your story!

If you are willing to participate in a 60-minute interview, please contact Zoë Meleo-Erwin at wls.sociology.study@gmail.com.

In your message, please provide your name and a phone number where you can be contacted.

There is no compensation for participating in this study. However, you may experience the interview as an opportunity to tell your story and add to a larger understanding of what it is like to be considered obese and then to have or plan to have weight loss surgery in today's society.

This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Graduate Center. I am also happy to answer any questions you have about my research.

I look forward to hearing from you! And if you know anyone in the New York City area you think might be an interview candidate, would you please pass along this message? I would appreciate it.

All the best,

Zoe C. Meleo-Erwin, MA, PhD Candidate

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
