1 Week until Lap Band Surgery!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

My name is Christine, and I am getting banded on 7-25-2011. :) I have been doing the pre-op liquid diet for a week now, and I've already lost 9.5 lbs. First, I'm wondering if this much loss is normal? And will the insurance take away the approval if my BMI goes too low? I am getting the surgery because I had a co-morbidity (sleep apnea) along with a BMI of 35. But it was right at 35 before the liquid diet and now I'm already down to 33.5 BMI.

There are really only a few people who know that I am going through with the surgery, (they won't even know that I'm in the hospital, I'm far away from them, army spouse) I don't know why but I am afraid to tell them that I am having this done? I told my sister but nobody else in my immediate family knows except my husband and 3 very close girlfriends. I am getting it done for me to get rid of the weight and sleep apnea... but it it normal to not tell them?

Looking forward to hearing from you all and making new friends :)

Hi, Christine! I am also getting banded on Monday. How exciting! I've been on the pre-op diet for a week and have lost 11 lbs. so I think it's common. I'm not even on the liquid diet... I have also heard that they are supposed to use the first weight you walked into your Doctor's office with, not the weight you lost since that time so I don't think it'll be a problem.

And, like you, I haven't told anyone about my surgery except my mom and dad. My weight has always been a sensitive subject and I don't really want the extra pressure from everyone else when the I put enough pressure on myself. I think it is your decision and whatever you feel comfortable with. You're the one that'll be going through all the work so, quite frankly, it's really no one else's business unless you want it to be.

Good luck on your journey! I hope the surgery goes well!

I totally agree. I am in the same boat- i haven't told anyone besides my parents and a LD friend. My mom had gastric bypass along time ago and the friend had a band done about two years ago. They both have said it was the best decision they ever made, so I ty to focus on that. I think I am afraid of the social aspect of it. What will my friends say (because eventually they will know, right?) And what about my family- what will my siblings say? I think about all these things. But I know I am the one who has had to face the weight for the last 30 years and I know this is what I want. So I think it's normal to keep this private. I think the challenge will be the lifestyle change later.

I was wondering if others out there ever had to deal with this aspect? What do you do with peer pressure and family?

What do you do with peer pressure and family?

I actually don't have a lot of pressure from family or friends. I just didn't want the "food police" every time I ate. You know, the basic "are you allowed to eat that?" questions... I'm sure as time goes on, and the weight comes off, it'll get easier to talk about and I'll come clean. But, right now I just don't want anyone to know. I definitely don't think it's unusual.

I am excited for both of us! And thanks for your thoughts, now what I am feeling doesn't quite feel so bad. I think you are right the extra pressure from everyone knowing would probably make it harder... Good luck next week, I'll be thinking of you! :)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
