Products for pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

I'm interested to know what products a lot of people use in their pre-op diets. My doctor is less restrictive but I'd like to have an idea of what shakes your physician recommended or what specific guidelines they gave you with regards to calorie count, carb count etc and what products you came upon yourself or other essentials you think were life saving during the pre-op. I just want to be prepared.

The only thing that matters is that you lose a few pounds before surgery to shrink your liver. A lot of doctors don't even require it. Mine didn't but I took it upon myself to do so. I figured if I made it easier for him, it would inevitably make it easier on myself down the road.

My doctor recommended shakes that have less than 20g of carbs per serving and more than 15g of Protein per serving. I haven't found some that I really like yet. The EAS premade shakes from Walmart weren't too bad though.

Syntrax nectar Protein shakes (Amazon.com or their website). I liked all the flavors I tried, Roadside Lemonade, ice-tea, etc.; Body Fortress Super whey Protein (Walmart).

Jello; sugarfree popsicles, oatmeal, skim milk, strawberries, salad, tomatoes and cucumbers. These are things that I was allowed to have. My doctor puts us on a 3 week pre-op diet. I could also have chicken and fish for dinner with the salad or certain vegetables. two shakes a day and then the light dinner. It was doable and it worked to shrink the liver.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
