Hmmmm - Need a Goal Weight

Recommended Posts

biggrin.gif So I was banded June, 2010 and I had a potential goal in mind before I was banded, but the PA in the office said my goal of 140 was probably too low, so he recommended 160 as a healthy goal. I started at 263 and I am now 176 and starting to think that 160 may not be low enough... I am in a size 10 and I was never looking to be a size 2 - I just want to look good. I am also headed for my TT and I know that some pounds may come off then depending on how much fat rather than just skin is cut off.

I am 5'7" and medium build - if I look around on the 'net there are different ideal weights depending on what site I look at so I am looking to this community to help me have a more concrete goal. Any ideas??

You should probably set your goal to a weight that gives you a healthy BMI (<25). When I had my TT he removed 10 pounds of skin. Don't expect to see that on the scale right away, though. Due to all the swelling and drainage caused by the surgery it took almost 3 weeks to see it.

It really depends on things like your age and frame/build, but a BMI of around 24 or 25 would look good on just about anyone.

I am also 5'7" ( 46 yrs old.) 150 pounds looks the best for me. When I was younger 140 looked great, but now I start looking sickly under 150.

I agree, weight is just a number. Find a weight where you feel good about yourself, it may be higher or lower than what your doctor says. When I started my journey at 374 pounds, my doctor's goal for me was simply to get under 200 lbs (I'm only 19 lbs away!). Right now, if I can get down to 185 I'll be happy as a clam (I'm 5' 6 1/2" medium build). Maybe I'll want to lose more when I get there, maybe not. We'll see! And don't even worry about those height and weight charts...they are ridiculously unrealistic. My best friend is 5'8" and weighs 160, is a size 8 and is considered almost overweight, because she is at the very tippy top of the healthy weight range on most weight charts...and the girl's a toothpick!

I think a good goal weight is where YOU feel good, and healthy, but not too thin. The BMI charts are helpful to pick a number but I do think in general, BMI is a load of crap so don't get too caught up in those numbers. Congrats on your great loss so far!

Right now even being in a size 10 doesn't feel good because of hanging mid- section skin. I am 42 years old, and thinner than I ever remember being.

Try not to get too caught up in the Quest for perfection.

My mid-section isn't too bad, but my arms and thighs would make anyone cry. I try to focus on enjoying that general thin feeling and enjoy the fact I'm no longer morbidly obese :D

I try hummingbird, I do try. Just can't see past it no matter how hard I try, but I do enjoy clothes with no w in the size and getting my bras at VS

I am hoping the TT helps Ellie. I already promised my best friend that if it doesn't I will " talk to someone" about it. I think I look okay as long as I have Spanx on, but who wants to wear Spanx when it's hot as h^*+ outside

See I started at 304 and am 5'2" and the least I remember weighing was 155 when I was a senior in high school..37 years ago. 33 years ago I got down to 170, so at this point...I am around 260 and I will be happy to see 199. LOL.. but I would like to get to 155. But realistically....I am setting minor goals....250, 200, etc.

I think that's why I never really set a true goal. I didn't want to let myself down. But I am pretty happy with what I have done thus far- maybe being at 100 lbs lost may be nice

Thank you all for helping me :o)

Im at my goal weight now, but am just not happy because of my excess belly skin. I see it as a lot of fat that needs to be gone. I keep hoping that once I do get a TT, I can finally be happy.

Oh and I kept changing my goal weight and seeing how I looked when I got to each goal.

Nothing makes me angrier than doctors dissing a perfectly reasonable and healthy goal! 140 would be great, and personally i'd even aim for 130. I can tell you at five foot ten, I consider myself decidedly porky at 160! You can achieve anything you want!

I never would set a goal until about 6 months ago which was about 2 1/2 years out. I picked 162 because I started at 324 and that is half. I'm still not sure about it. If I get there and decide it was wrong, I'll set a new one. On the other hand, if I get to 168 and like it I'll stay there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
