My name is Jerry. I was banded on 3/20/03 by Dr Mark Pleatman at the North Oakland Medical Center in Pontiac Michigan. My highest weight was in January of 2001 and I weighed 390 lbs. At that time I went on a diet and lost about 50 lbs. Slowly but surely I was regaining. In January of 2003 , at a weight of 355 lbs, my PCP asked me to investigate a strange new device called an "Adjustable Gastric Band". I had always been opposed to the drastic internal changes required of other weight loss surgeries, and would never consider them. The minimaly invasive, and totally reversible nature of the lap band intrigued me, and I started my research. Well the rest is history. I was banded and am working on reaching my goal weight of 200 lbs. I am an Engineer and therefore like plans, targets, and tracking charts so I record and plot everything I eat or drink, and all my exercise. I am trying to eat a quantity of calories that would allow me to maintain a weight of 200 lbs. I figure if I can do that during the loosing phase then maybe my chances of maintaining 200 lbs is feasible. As of today(7/22/03) I have lost 66 lbs which is about 44% of my excess weight.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
