Marathoning lapbanders

Recommended Posts

So I have been running for a while and training for my second matathon this year and I always wonder if im eating to much or to little I have about 6 ccs in my ap standard band was having a hard time eating early in the year for first marathon. I was contemplating an unfill but this second marathon training I can actually eat but I don't want to get a fill and be unable to eat unhealthy running 26.2 miles is no joke!!!

so is anyone else training and how are you eating to support all the.running and cross training thou are doing...

Also any ideas to be able to lose 20-25 lbs while training would be appreciated.

Also if your reading this just to read you can run or jog/walk a marathon find a buddy pick a marathon to run and do it.... or take baby steps to get there.

If you're going to lose weight, even while training, then you have to take in less calories than you're burning. But you do need enough to fuel what you're doing too.

I havent run a marathon, only a half but what I find with being a runner is that I need to eat carbs. I cant run on a Protein shake diet! It just doesnt fuel you properly, you need to instant energy that wholegrains provide AS WELL AS adequate Protein. As long as I include foods like good bread and cereals in my daily plan, I didnt find even with half marathon distances that I needed specific sports nutrition - I firmly believe that sort of thing (the pre workout/post workout shake routine, gatorade etc) only adds calories and makes it harder to lose. I've done two halfs and at 43, my knees, hips and backs are not up to this sort of distance as a regular thing, so mainly I stick with 10K's and for that, obviously, my daily 1500 calires including carbs is perfectly adequate.

I guess it depends why you're asking - are you jsut generally curious or did you really have trouble with the marathons you've done? Obviously it *might* be necessary to unfill to eat more.

Jachut, thanks for replaying! I'm mainly just comparing notes with other runners. I think we need ideas to fuel our runs especially when running with a band! Its funny because I have to have both carbs and protien or I'm cranky.

As far as Gatorade I used to drink but dont anymore I use gels and shot blocks (gummys) and to drink I use nuun with only.6 calories per.serving I can totally drink knowing I'm not drinking all that sugar!

Keep the suggestions coming!

I had hoped running would increase my appetite. It hasnt so far. I just started training for a triathlon which is on September 11. I'm now either running 4 miles, biking 12 miles or swimming a mile. I alternate each day and sometimes do two of those options on one day. I also lift weights two days a week.

I worry about running out of fuel or really messing with my metabolism by only eating about 700 calories daily. It's a struggle every day to eat more and I have no fill. I'd be in serious trouble.

I also have a hard time eating before I work out. What do you guys eat before working out?

I'm not quite to where you folks are yet, I'm still working up to my first 5K, but I'm getting there!! I've been out on the trail for almost 4 miles a day, about half of it running, and half power walking. I was told by my nutritionist that I will need to eat some more carbs and a little more fat for energy plus 10 grams more Protein than I have been. I think though that part of it for me is the fact that I'm still a relatively large person (6ft tall and 306, although I'm down almost 100 pounds from June 2010), so I might not be the best example.

Reading that you folks are training for marathons is SO inspiring! I sincerely hope that is me someday!

Ooh! Thanks for this website. I've been mostly vegetarian for almost three years (I say mostly because I eat fish but no other animal products). I wish I had an appetite. Since the day I was banded I've had none.

Seriously, I think this view that training at layman level requires specialised nutrition is problematic - I wouldnt feel the need to eat before running 4 miles. Its a seriously great achievement for a former overweight person to run four miles and you deserve huge kudos for doing it. But in terms of serious exercise, its not that far or that much that you'll keel over if you dont eat before or after. It burns only somewhere between 300 and 400 calories. Even if you did two options on a day, a normal daily intake is going to be ample, but I agree with you that 700 calories is really leaving you a bit short of energy but the whole idea is calorie deficit and at our level of traiing, energy bars, shakes etc do nothing more than add calories that you probably dont need. Just a banana would do the trick - I think you need carbs to perform cardio well. I dont generally imbibe anything other than Water afterwards.

Starting to train for my first Half and glad i came across this topic. I use the Powerade Zeros so I never have to worry about the calories but I am afraid on the longer run (actual Half) that I could run into issues and need to supplement something since on my last run (5 miles) I burned close to 818 calories and that is only a third of the way there lol.

Im not talking about carb loading for a four mile run or anything. I exercise first thing in the morning and sometimes I tire quickly. My trainer tells me I'm crazy not to eat before strength training or doing cardio. He said I should be waking my metabolism up as early as possible.

Today I ran my four then biked for ten. I didn't eat until 5:00 tonight. I just don't know if I would perform better with some food in me or not. Nothing appeals and I am looking for something that doesn't take up much tummy space but will give me a boost.

WOW! Good work!

I just ordered some Nuun online a few days ago. I saw that on nomeatathlete.com per your suggestion!

How far in advance of your run to do eat? Most days I make the decision to have a cup of coffee instead of Breakfast in the morning but I need to change that!

If I run in the AM like 30-60 min only because sleep is so important vs eating! Today I had a quick bite from my mix a few minutes before run. coffee is fine if you can handle it all my running buddies drink it before run I don't.because I hate having to go potty so much when I have coffee.< /p>

Oh I love Nuun been.using for 2 months.and love... Pink lemonade and fruit punch the most I have 6 flavors to including u hydrate flavors. I drink that vs juice and when I want more then jus Water. Let me know how you like it when you get them :0)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
