hard time with not drinking

Recommended Posts

I am having a very hard time with not drinking with my meals, its such a habit for me, eat, take a drink, eat, take a drink, I know its causing my food to go down faster but for some reason I still do it. I need help. Anyone else having this problem?

It's easiest if you just don't pour yourself a drink :)

Yeah I can really relate, it's super tough to stop drinking with the meal. I have been better lately and do note the amount of food I can eat is waaay less wo/water so my stall/palteau is probably related to eating more than I thought I was so although it's really hard I will try to do the right thing good luck to you on doing it.

You need to figure out why you are drinking. If it is because the food is not moist enough, maybe consider introducing more Condiments and sauces to your meals. If it is more of a social/behavioral habit, then the easiest way is to start off by using a smaller cup, pouring less, and gradually weaning yourself off the habit.

I am having the same problem. Pre surgery I would drink multiple glasses of ice Water with any meal - big or small. I LOVE to drink.

I feel your pain. It is so tough!

I was told we need to wait 30 minutes after we finish eating to drink. I try....but most I have made it so far is 15!<_<

I once saw a post about this same thing. That persons solution was to have a glass of ice with his meal and he would only drink the amount that melted during the meal.

I dont know what stage u are on food wise or whether you have had a fill, but I was the same way before my first fill. Now I cant drink anything during it or it hurts. I have to wait at least 15 minutes for everything to go down. Then I try to stretch it to 30.

its hard, because I like to drink with my meals also. Hard habit to break. Just know it might not be possible depending on your fill.

I have had more trouble with this than any other aspect of the band. Connie answered my question because I was wondering if fills made a difference and it sounds like they do. I have always been a "guzzler" so to speak to the point that my friends gave me a hard time about how many times the waiter had to fill up my drink per meal. I have a horrible habit and I hate it!!!

Man, I am worried about this too. I tend to drink a LOT of ice Water or ice tea with my food, especially when eating out. Right now it's not a problem, because I'm still having so many liquid meals, but after I'm on to normal food I'm going to have to be really careful about the whole 1/2-hour before or after thing.

Also, this thread is both funnier and sorta sad if you assume we're talking about alcohol. "I JUST CAN'T STOP DRINKING. ohmy.gif"

I drink with my meals. Not a lot, just sips as needed to keep things moving. If I don't do that, it's hard to swallow. My nutritionist and surgeon both know, and neither has a problem with it. They say as long as my hunger is controlled, drinking with meals makes no difference. I can't guzzle liquids any more, and don't even try. But they taught me to sip my liquids all the time after surgery, so that's what I do - including during meals. I've had zero problems.

If the point of not drinking is to keep from flushing food through your band too fast, and therefore causing yourself to get hungry sooner, which may cause you to ultimately overeat, the fix is to limit your food portions. If I know I have X amount of food on my plate, and when that's gone I'm done eating, then whether or not I drink along with that food is a non-issue. When I've finished eating that meal, I know it'll be so many hours till my next meal, and that's that. Overeating or snacking or eating the wrong food just isn't going to happen.

Whether this is right or wrong doesn't seem to be a factor. it's about weight loss results, right? It's working for me.

My solution is to not pour myself a drink with my meal if I'm at home. If I'm out, I like to have a drink before the meal, by the time the food us served my husband is normally ready for a refill so we exchange glasses and then I refuse any refills. As soon as I finish eating I check the time so I know when 30 minutes is up so I can drink again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
