Does getting lap band fills hurt?

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for my first fill in two weeks. My PA said it only hurts a little and that they use nothing to numb the area. But a friend's doctor rubs the surface first to initially sort of numb it, then does a small shot to numb the inside area before using the needle to insert the saline! So sounds like it may be pretty uncomfortable without anything. If your dr. uses nothing like mine, could you please share how it felt? Thanks.

My doctor did not numb me the first time. The second and third time I asked for a numbing shot. I think it depends on where your port is and how easily accessible it is. I am just a big chicken though and would rather feel nothing. Either way, the fill is totally worth it!

My doctor doesn't numb the area at all. The first time I heard that some doctors do it kinda shocked me. It's really less uncomfortable than a mosquito bite. Seriously, whats the point of sticking a needle in to numb it for the next needle? Your gonna feel one of them!!

I've only had one fill so far, and I did not even feel it. I agree with Cindy c though, what is the point of numbing it? So now you've gotten stuck twice instead of once. Like I said, I didn't even feel the needle going in. But then again I stab (though not in the abdoman) myself with a needle at work accidentally at least once every couple of weeks or more...lol, I always say, good thing I don't work with humans.

The fill usually happens so quick that it's not really worth it to get the lidocaine. It's uncomfortable, but not horrible. Usually I'll ask any questions I have while the PA is doing the fill to distract myself so I'm not thinking about the discomfort too much. You'll be fine!

Got my third one today. I dont think it hurts at all. Slight poke and then you can feel it tugging on the inside of your belly. Kinda weird feeling. But mine is fairly close to the surface, so I think kinda easy to find. might have mire if a problem if they cant find it easily. good luck!

Wow! I'm exactly where you are regarding getting close to ONE-DER-LAND!! Just thought about that today. My weight loss is getting a little slower, so it will probably be a month before I get there, but oh well....last time I was in Onederland was about 5 years ago for a short visit. This time, I am moving there permanently, so what's one month?!

Thank you everyone for sharing all your great experiences with your fills...and everything else! I am now not going to worry about my first fill one more minute!

Everyone here is so wonderful, understanding, supportive, and just over-all amazing!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
