When you say your band is wide open at night...

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have read alot of people saying that their band is wide open at night, allowing them to eat alot at dinner. This really concerns me, because my typical eating pattern is that I am not very hungry during the day and don't eat much, but then at night I eat a huge dinner because I finally get hungry. So, when you say your band is open at night and you can eat alot, does that mean you can eat at pre-band levels? (Three-four pieces of pizza, or an entire entree from a restaurant, for example) Or does it mean you can eat "more" than during the day, but not as much as pre-band levels? If I will be able to eat a pre-band dinner, then I am extremely concerned that I will gain weight instead of losing! After all, eating in this pattern is what put me here in the first place! I can go through the whole day eating like, a bowl of Cereal in the morning, a protien bar for lunch, no Snacks, and then eat an enormous dinner. It's the enormous dinner that makes me gain so much. So, I am quite concerned that post banding I will be facing the same issue. I'm hoping that by "wide open" you mean more than during the day, but not as much as pre-band.

A typical "wide open" meal would piece a couple pieces of pork, a serving of greenbean casserole and serving mashed potatoes - mug of ice cream for dessert. I do not usually eat during the day only coffee and crystal light.

These comments are helpful. I frequently have the experience of eating not a hug amount but enough without difficulty then another time 1/2 that and get miserable with maybe the PB thing. There doesn't yet seem to be a patterm. It can be mid day at times. Sometimes I think it's related to how relaxed I am.

It is not consistant with me either. Last night I couldn't eat but about 3 bites of fish and a couple bites of salad. Today at lunch I ate a thin piece of fish about the size of my hand and a half cup of salad. Sometimes I think it is more open after I drink something warm. It's like getting to know your body all over again, huh?

Sunta, being wide open at night for me means I can eat more than during the course of the day, but it's still less than pre-band.

I'm the same as Cissy... I can eat more, but it's nothing like pre-band.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
