9 days away and I can't stop reading posts

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! My name is Glorianne. I live in Boulder, CO and am scheduled for surgery July 14. I only decided a few weeks ago this was the option for me (after ANOTHER failed diet due to extreme hunger), but since I am financing it instead of going through insurance, I was able to fast-track the process. Unfortunately, I am having family stay with me the week of the surgery, so I'm a little worried that my post-op liquid diet (and pain? fatigue?) may put a damper on things. Still, I decided I could no longer wait so I booked the surgery.

I'm excited -- a little nervous too -- and I have been glued to the forums so I can see what to expect. As an information junkie, I am thrilled there is a site like this where any minor concern, victory, tip or trick can be voiced. Wish me luck everyone!

My surgery was 6/27/11 . In the beginning, I did sleep every couple of hours. I spent one night in the hospital, and walked around the neighborhood the day after I got home. The day after that, I was at the mall. Following the eating plan, and taking my meds. Good luck. Let us know how you are doingrolleyes.gif.

Congrats on your decision. I was banded at the end of April and didn't have too much trouble with the surgery. The first day after I did sleep quite a bit and had pain from the gas, but I recovered quickly after that. I was able to visit with family who came to see me, but I didn't have to cook or anything for them. I hope you won't have to do too much for your visitors. Plan ahead and make it as easy on yourself as possible.

Take care and good luck.

What a great time to have your family near by to support you and assist you after surgery. I would look at it positively and lean on them while they are there :)

hey there!

Well, I just got banded 11 days ago, so I can tell you my fresh experience... my doc had me on the two week liquid pre-op diet. I'm glad he did. he said my surgery went very well and he could tell I stuck to the diet by the size and color of my liver, and that's the purpose of that diet... shrink the liver as much as possible to make surgery easier. Also go high on Protein to aid in the healing process.

I had surgery on Friday, and my doc requires an overnight stay so I went home Saturday AM. yea, I felt like I got punched in the gut (no duh) but other than that I was OK. back on the full liquid diet. Me personally, I made it a point to get up and walk for at least 10 minutes every hour, then 15 and 20 as I could. By Monday I could shuffle around for 20 minutes every hour. Did a lot of catnapping from Saturday to Wednesday. Felt much better Thursday, cut the lawn Friday, and was back to work Monday. So I was off a week. and just so you can get perspective, I'm 52 years old, 6'5" and weighed 380 going into surgery.

hope that helps. any questions, please let me know.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
