Is it realistic to set a goal of 85 lbs lost in 1 year? I'm currently around 285 and would like to enter onederland in a year.

For those of you that have been at this a while, what was your weight loss after a year? Thanks!

I think so, I've lost over 40 lbs in 3 mos and i started at 260, with my preop diet I've lost 62 lbs, starting at 278.

I've lost 80 plus pounds in 7 months, all of it post surgery. I would recommend that you set mini goals though. I started at 244 and my first goal was to get below 200, then after that I wanted to fit into a pair of jeans I hadn't worn for 2 years, which put me at around 190. After I went through all the clothes in my closet and had to start buying clothes, I would buy them so they fit, but were a little snug so I had incentive to lose more :) Good luck to you and go at it 1 pound at a time!!!

There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to. I started out about 40 pounds more than you and averaged 11.5 pounds a month for the first year. I hit onederland in 14 months. Good luck.

Yes you can set that goal. I lost all my weight of 117 lbs in 11 months. I have been at below goal since april.

Just follow the guidelines and you should be able to.

I was banded April 4th and have gone from 304 to 234 in that three months. You do have to work hard at it. I go to curves five days a week, ride my bike 5 days a week and walk on the other two days! good luck

Totally realistic, but it's really up to you and how much you put into it too. I'm now just over 6 months and I'm almost at 50#. While it is slower than a lot I'm happy with it and I do kickboxing a lot so I'm pretty sure some of the fat is turning into muscle and if I didn't do it I'd probably have more weight loss. But so far, my skin I'd bouncing back so I'm ok with it.

I think it's totally doable, I agree with other responders when I say that you should set small goals. That's something that I've found to be really rewarding for me; and they don't even have to be 'pounds lost' goals. I have been setting goals like, in two weeks I want to be able to run a whole mile, or in two weeks I want to bench press such and such amount.

For me personally my next goal is to get my BMI into the 30s (I can't wait!)

Best of luck to you! I think you can do it if you do all the right things :D

Thanks guys! You're awesome! My surgery is in a couple weeks and so far, I've lost 21 lbs pre-op. Even though I feel and look exactly the same haha it's still nice to see that number go down :-) I plan on working very hard because at the end of my weightless will hopefully be a new baby :-)

If u stay focuse on your main goal and that is to lose weight by adopting a healthier eating lifestyle, you can do it!!! A lot of people tend to get stuck on what they CAN'T eat instead of focusing on eating the good stuff we need to lose the weight... I knew that pizza and burgers and beer would be out of the question for a while if not for good but I was willing to let them go to lose the weight. My surgery date was 7/14/10 and weight was 273 I am down to 191 today (hallelujah) and I feel great. I don't feel deprived because I have learned to enjoy the foods that I can eat. Don't get me wrong I miss having a good juicy burger bub and all but now I just get it bunless with all the toppings I would normally eat on it... LOL... Waiters and waitresses get a kick out of it when I orser it and sy it is mt cheat day! LOL...

Good luck on your journey!

Most definitely! I'm 10 months out (and a week) and down 108 lbs. The weight came off quicker in the first few months, but is still coming off. Just have to watch what you eat, and get active.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
