Need Recipes for Liquid Post Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am 4 days post-op and already I am sick of the liquids. I have had beef and chicken broth, Tomato Soup, cream of mushroom Soup, cream of potato soup (of course these have been blended so no mini chuncks), cream of wheat, and yogurt. Does anyone have any good recipes that will help me deal with this portion of my recovery for the next few weeks. I have to stay strong and I like to play in the kitchen. It also doesn't help that my husband is a manager for Schwans food Company! Thanks in advance for all the help!

These were my lifesaver after about 2-3 weeks post OP. I had a lot of fun getting creative and testing out different things. Be careful with some of them, as everyone is different with their band. I was able to tolerate a lot and most mushy food without any issues, but not everyone can right away, so go really REALLY slow with them. Especially with the Peanut Butter or egg ones that are VERY heavy sitting in the stomach....

...And if you have any concerns with trying anything at all, talk to your doc or nutritionist first.

I lost 9 lbs during my liquid faze, even using these recipes! That was 1.5 lbs per week!

GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY! :) ;)

J’s High Protein Full liquid Recipes

PHASE 2: Full liquid diet

This starts 1 day after surgery

NOTE: On the Full liquid diet, up to 6-8oz per meal is OK for 3-6 meals a day with lots of Water and mini 2-4oz Snacks in between (snacks are optional, but can create slower weight loss). Make sure to drink LOTS of Water. The bulk of your fullness should be water. Stop before feeling full. I am consistently losing weight with these measurements.

Remember to drink or eat very slowly. You can train yourself by using tiny baby spoons.

The point of this 6 week plan, I am told is partly to shrink your stomach and get you prepared for the first band tightening where you will be limited to very tiny amounts. The doc wants you to get bored of these foods, because after the 6 weeks, you go strictly to solids and water. No more mushy or liquids.

All of my recipes include ingredients that can be found at most Whole Foods Markets, Trader Joes or Meijers Grocery.

Organic products are all optional, but I (from recent experience) highly recommend for those wanting a more rapid weight loss or healthier system in general. Using skim milk over cream or any other dairy milk will speed it up as well. The nut milks are a great way to sneak in even more nutrients. Most grocery stores carry these organic products now, but you have to look for them.

*All my high fat recipes include only healthy or beneficial fats that have not been processed and do not include any hydrogenated oils. Please check the nutrition labels before purchasing any ingredients.*

My Personal Tips for More Rapid Weight Loss Using the Liquid Recipes:

1. Use my snack recipes only once a day

2. Choose only my low fat options from my recipe list

3. Stay under 1000 calories.

4. Minimize the amount of sweetener used

5. Choose a Superfoods recipe at least once per day

6. Take liquid multi Vitamins from Whole Foods Market once a day

7. DRINK MORE WATER

Cream Soups

Meijers Grocery & Whole Foods Market carry an AMAZING Organic Cream Soups collection, Imagine & Pacific brand, where you can poor it right out of the carton! Most of the soups have no chunks in them (chunks have to be strained). You can also choose the LOW SODIUM flavors which are very good and (optional) add real sea salt from Whole Foods Market to them later if you want. Choose any flavor and enjoy!

My Faves:

  1. Organic Creamy Tomato

Thank you for all the options! I found out today that I don't tolerate Peanut Butter in protien shake form. Having major chest pains. I'm sipping beef broth now hoping it will melt the pb and stop the pain!

Wow you are lucky! I'm required to be on liquids for a full week! My only permissible items are Water, sugar free Jello, boullion or clear broth, Decaf coffee and tea, Crystal Light and other no calorie (sugar free) beverages, and sugar free popsicles! I'd kill for some Soup or yogurt!

I was on Clear Liquids for 2 weeks. I actually dreamed about chicken salad. It's good I think, to not only rest you stomach, but it also rests you palate and teaches you that a lot of our hunger is in our heads. You also get really tired of sweet. Things tasted really different when I was done. I don't crave chocolate like I did, I have a mini bar once a month or so. I learned to entertain myself in other ways other than food. I would recommend highly that you not start eating things like bread and Pasta and other no-no foods even if you can for a while because you don't have a fill. It makes it easier in the long run. I have had bread or pasta in 3 mos. I've eaten pasta at least 2 times a week all my life, but I dint miss it. Watch out for Constipation, start working Fiber into your diet. Good luck with your journeys.

Your very welcome! Yeah, Peanut Butter is SUPER heavy, and I found that if I did only 4oz of one of my peanut butter shakes for Breakfast it would sustain me alllll day, SO I ONLY used it on days where I knew I would be away from home for hours.

Now that I am on solids, I still use the recipes for days where I feel like I need the extra Protein.

Tell me about it. Thanks so much for these recipes, I may try one or two. My dietitian's menu said I could advance to strained Soups like Lentil, chicken with pastas, etc. (no eating the Pasta part though only strained) yogurt and cream of wheat starting on day 3. I have a tiny bowl of cream if wheat, 3 carnation instant breakfasts, and broth ( chicken or vegetable) throughout the day. I realized I wasn't drinking enough Water and had to take Colace, but now I'm drinking more water a day and feeling much better. Tomato Soup irritates my stomach something awful. Tried it day 3 and 4. Must be the acidity in the tomatoes. Too soon I guess, so no more Tomato Soup for me for a while. I tried the vegetable broth today and it was delish. My husband said they also make a seafood broth, which I plan to go back and get. My husband's a chef, and how I miss his big meals. He needs to learn how to cook up some bariatric recipes. Having a cookout today, my big test of will power. Thanks for sharing guys. I needed a change up. I was bored to death too with the same ole. Still got more weeks to go. Good part, I've lost a bout a pound a day. Slow and steady wins the race too.

Your very welcome. I too find that tomato bothers my band very much, along with orange juice (BIG TIME!) and lemonade (not as bad).

BTW Whole Foods Market and Meijers sell the most AMAZINGGGGGGG tasting Organic cream soups which are IMAGINE & PACIFIC brand . I'm sure that Jewel Grocery and a few others carry them now too. They were soooo good and so super healthy compared to the Campbell's (or any other brands that docs seem to recommend) that once I discovered them, I was happy as a clam!!!

You rock Singingpeaches!!! I am going to the store and getting some of the Soups from Imagine Foods. I am excited to try the Sweet Pea, Acorn Squash & Mango, and Red Bliss Potato! Thanks and any other tidbits of advice is greatly appreciated! I love my Band!

You've gotten some great advice so far, but I wanted to add that I recommend Pacific Natural foods brand Soups like Butternut Squash (especially with a little plain yogurt in it), and if you can tolerate it the roasted red pepper and Tomato, carrot ginger, curried red lentil or black bean Soup. They are all puree'd and oh so yummy! I found them to be much more interested than puree'd ol' cream of potato from campbells, which I got SO SICK OF.

OH YES I AGREE!! Pacific is way better then Imagine, and the roasted red pepper (with some added onion powder & a little powdered Parmesan cheese) and the carrot/ginger/cashew ( AS IS!:D ) is absolutelyyyyy my fave!!!!

Thanks so much :) ..the sweet pea looks gross coming out of the box (lol) but it tastes PHENOM! They are super healthy... ditch those oily Cambell's Soups with all the artificial ingredients and switch to the good stuff ;)

1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
