How soon did you go back to work?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I searched the forums for this topic but could not find an answer so I apologize if this thread has already been discussed, but I was wondering how soon everyone returned to work after surgery. At my psych eval on Tuesday, the therapist said that the normal recovery time is 2-4 weeks! I was under the impression I could return to work after a week and have only requested one week of sick leave. Now I'm concerned. I'm sure it will vary for everybody but if I could get a general idea of an average return time, that would be great. (Working outside the home or "returning to normal activites" like school or housework).

Thanks!

I personally wanted to take alot of time off to recover and get back to being me. I was out of work for 4 weeks. And I still had a hard time getting back into the groove of things. It's all up to you, if you have the time, take it!

If I were working I would have been back in 3 days. In fact I sent my hubby back to work on day 4 post op and took care of my 2 and 4 yr olds with no problems.

i had 2 weeks off

it really depends what type of work you do

if there is alot of heavy lifting i would say you would need longer

ask your surgeon he knows best

I'm a BIG ol' weiner about pain and such...so I took a week and a half. I could have gone back in a few days (but I do have a desk job and no lifting). It took me about a week to feel "right" again. The extra half week was good tho. The anesthesia made me sleeeeepy for a long time after.

I had surgery on Thursday and went back to work on Monday - I could have used one more day - but not really too bad overall.

I had it done on Friday and went back to work on Monday. I was just amazed at how great I felt and still do 3 weeks later.

I had surgery on Tuesday and plan on going back the following Wednesday or Thursday if everything goes as we expect it to. I'm not feeling anything close to my normal energy level, so I may even take the rest of next week off ...depends on how I feel by then.

I had surgery on Tuesday and was doing small household tasks that didn't involve lifting, pulling or pushing the day after surgery. I would have returned to work the next week but unfortunately I pushed too much with doing things around the house and got my time of the month and ended up being exhausted. I had another week off after that. I slept a lot that week.

As long as your job doesn't involve heavy lifting one week will be plenty of time off.I found it was the anesthesia that knocked me more, which made me feel like I couldn't concentrate for long periods of time.Which passed by day 4.You will be fine and milk it a little for extra help around the place as you won't get another chance.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
