Is this normal to lose 8 lbs with the pre-op diet, 4 lbs the week after surgery, and then not lose anything the following week. I have been banded two weeks, I am doing everything I am suppose to do, don"t really feel starving like I normally do, and today my weight is actually one lb more than last week. Has anyone experienced this? I do not get my fill until July 15th. I know he said the weight loss I had last week was the honeymoon phase but I thought I would lose 1 - 2 lbs a week until I hit goal.

It's completely normal. Right now your only focus should be on healing from the surgery, not on weight loss. I expect that after your first fill you will see a significant increase in food restriction.

Also, if your ticker is accurate, you do not seem to have so much excess weight that you can expect it to shed as quickly initially as someone who is 100+ lbs overweight. I know that for me a BMI of ~30 is way closer to my GOAL than my starting point. ;)

DaddyD is right on all counts. It is normal to stall with weight loss while you heal and your body adjusts to the 12 lb pre-op loss, even when you're doing everything right so be patient and try not to get frustrated (which is difficult, I know).

Also, because you are starting at a low BMI, your losses will most likely be slower than others you see around here. Try not to compare yourself. When I hit a 30 BMI and lower, my weight loss has slowed WAAAYY down and I'm losing 1-2 lbs a month now instead of 1-2 lbs a week. It's slow, but it's still coming off.

My starting BMI is similar to yours. I was banded 3 weeks ago. I didn't have a pre-op plan. When I went in for my first post-op visit I had only lost 4 lbs. My Doc said that was normal and 4lbs. for me was like 20lbs. for someone who had a lot of weight to lose. My Doc set a goal for me of 5lbs. a month. Of course I would like to lose more and have set my personal goal at 8lbs a month. I now have lost a total 9lbs. I upped my exercise but always get a minimum of 1000 calories and 60 grams of Protein. My Doc said, Protein, protein, and few carbs. Good luck.

Thank you for the replies. That makes me feel so much better. I just feel like I am doind everything right I should still be losing. I started witha BMI of 32. I did this because I was gaining 5 - 10 lbs a year. I culd take off 5 just to gain 7 or 8 back. I am self-pay and did it because of health reasons and feeling so bad all teh time. I had gained 49 lbs in the past 10 years. As I get older another health problem creeps in. I know I won't lose a lot each month but I was hoping 1 - 2 lbs a week. Glad to know that this is part of the healing phase. My doctor doesn't have me restricted on calories, he has me at <30 carbs per day, >80 g Protein. The pre-op diet helped to motivate me.

Your body is still recovering from the surgery so don't freak out too much. They usually say not to expect any major loss to start happening until 4-6 weeks out. I didn't even step on the scale for the first week because of all of the extra Fluid and puffiness. It will come off! :-)

Plus, with losing 8 lbs pre-op, you wouldn't have a huge loss right off the bat. I lost 10 pre-op and am down 17 since surgery (tomorrow will be 5 weeks)

Yep, I'll agree with everyone else that it sounds like you're doing just what you're supposed to do! My doctor says the first six weeks are for healing, and anything else I lose during that time is an extra bonus!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
