Recommended Posts

I was banded on 6/13 and weighed in at 216... I have been on full liq/mushies, with restriction and only 700 calorie a day intake and my weight hasn't changed.. I am kinda freaking... My doctor said its normal, but someone please reassure me!!!

Your Dr. is correct. You must remember for the first few weeks you are in the post-op healing stage. Some loose weight, some do not, some gain.

So, a lot of people have said I should push for at least 1000 calories a day, that at 700 my body is in starvation mode... can anyone offer me what their "peak" calorie intake is?

the first few weeks are about healing. you may not get in enough calories and you may not lose anything at all. I actually gained about 5 pounds in the transition from liquids to mushies to solids. after about the 5th week, it started falling off.

i didn't like that the scale was stuck there, but i knew to expect it, so even though it was frustrating as all get out, i just kept doing what i was supposed to do. those first few weeks i struggled to get enough calories too, but once my stomach had some time to heal and the swelling went down i was able to get more. i shoot for 1200, but i don't always hit it and that number is just a number that i myself decided to go for, so for you it may be different.

after you hit solids, just start documenting what you eat and then see if the calories are enough to make the scale go in the right direction, but don't worry if it's not moving right now, it will eventually.

Trust your doctor. He and his office will be the best source of information for you. Like Dawn said, some people lose, some people gain and some people maintain the first couple of weeks.

It's so true. We're all different! My thoughts are, any weight that I have lost in these first few weeks is an added bonus, but it's not expected. Just keep doing what you're supposed to do. If anything, what happens in these first weeks is going to give your doctor a good idea of how to adjust your band at your first fill. Focus on your healing, and you are going to do awesome.

Best of luck! Keep on keepin' on :D

Another thing to think about is that they put saline in your iv at the hospital. I wonder if that's why the scale hasn't moved, Water retention. I know it's discouraging to be taking in so little and not see the scale move. Just know that if you keep doing all the right things it will eventually. Keep us posted on how your doing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
