Road Trip!! what am I going to eat??

Recommended Posts

we are going to be taking a road trip to Texas in a couple weeks and I am planning on bringing a case of my favorite EAS low carb Protein Drinks and Premier Protein bars, and plan on stopping at a grocery store here and there for Chobani yogurt. But, my BIG question is...I know we'll be stopping at restaurants most of them fast food...what are my best choices?

I have the book Eat this Not that, but I'd like to hear from some of you who have been on road trips and how you managed.

Thanks for your input.

Good question! I think even at most fast-food places you'll find salads with grilled chicken on top. I'd always get them with dressing on the side, so you can control it yourself, and eat your chicken first. Unless you can't eat chicken? You can also always get a burger and not eat the bun, and get coleslaw as a side instead of fries. I can find a healthy option pretty much anywhere, except Popeye's Chicken ;)

Popeye's red Beans and rice...yum! And a skin off thigh...oh yeah.

Wendy's chili is great. Goes down very easily. McDonald's has snack wraps with chicken or burger. That is assuming you can eat chicken or burger. If not, you can order w/o meat and extra cheese. At taco places I do bean burritos or quesadillas. Often I just eat the stuffing out of burritos, as they are generally pretty big. Subway--I eat the stuffing out of sandwiches, DH and I split a footlong. I just leave the bread behind. But you can also get wraps and salads there. pizza, I can do thin crust or eat the topping (not the healthiest choice, but I am maintaining now).

Most fast food places have salads now. Nearly all of them with chicken are chicken breast, which gives me problems. When traveling, I stick with things I generally think will go down, even if higher in calories.

I have a little 12 volt cooler that we take on road trips. I put cheese sticks, yogurt, Protein drinks, fruit, and things like that in it. I also carry almonds and Protein Bars for if a place just doesn't have something. But they generally do.

Love the ideas they are all great suggestions. I don't eat bread or rice, but the Mexican choices would definitely work for me.

I totally forgot about almonds, which are another good option. Thanks Cocoabean for the suggestion of the cooler.

I like Sea Foods including, shrimp, Shrimp Cocktail, Pattie Melt/ cheese/ onions, (I DON"T EAT THE BREAD) so open faced is nice, chili, chicken salad, tuna salad, BBQ chicken.< /p>

Salad, Soups, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy.

These are some ideas to pick from. I will show my Bariatric Card, and pick what I want,, not what comes together. They then go by what I ask for.

Instead of chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy. I would choose chicken, Soup, cottage cheese.

This is very do able.

Have a good trip, Shirley.

Hardees has a very tasty low carb burger. The lettuce is the "bread"............FYI napkins, it can be messy! : )

Chik-Fil-A has chicken strips, they come in 3 and 4 strip packs. I get the 3-strip pack for lunch when I do fast food. No fries, no soda. But the chicken is moist and really good!

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I have not eaten a lot of fast food but you have given me a lot of ideas.

It ALWAYS takes me SO long to order, then I usually end up with the same thing....chicken nuggets, which I know will get old real quick on the road

Taco bell has a fresco taco with fresh salsa that is minus cheese. Really yummy and under 200 calories.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
