What Pre-Op Diet Are You On?

Recommended Posts

What a huge variation out there for the pre-op diet.

Mine is supposed to be just Protein shakes, three a day. But there are also these guidelines that my surgeon gave me:

75-90 g Protein per day

less than40 g carbohydrates

600-800 calories per day

less than 30 g fat

So I have been making a lot of my own concoctions with some real food. I got the roasted red pepper/tomato Soup in a carton and used a cup of that, some soy protein, some chicken broth and some V8 juice along with some black pepper and a touch of hot sauce.

This makes a nice savory option so I don't alsways have to be drinking sweet tasting things, and I can regulate things so I keep within the guidelines.

Also I put a lot of ice, a few frozen strawberries and some real lemon juice with my whey powder and splenda, of course, and it is pretty delicious. I just hate the idea of drinking fake 'manufactured' food instead of the real thing.

I have lost 8 pounds in the last 6 days doing this! I have had waves of weakness when I had to go and sit/lie down for a few minutes. I have to be careful in the heat to drink lots of Water or my favorite grapefruit crystal lite drink. Yesterday I made the mistake of going way too long without a Protein shake and ended up eating some roasted chicken--maybe 4 oz. It was a good wake-up call that I have to be taking in my shakes every 4 hours or pay the price.

Thank goodness I am very occupied during the day with work. Otherwise, it would be much harder. As it is, I have had an easier time of it than I expected. My surgeon expects me to continue this diet for 3 weeks AFTER surgery, as well, so even more reason to make it liveable from the start.

Best of luck, everybody!

I started my Pre-Op diet on June 11th my surgery is scheduled for June 24th 2011.

The Pre-Op Diet my Surgeon recommends is the low carb diet similar to Atkins for 1-2 weeks. My Surgeon said that this diet will shrink the liver, because the body will burn up all of the fat that is stored in the liver when you don't give it carbs to burn first.

My diet consists of something like. eggs and bacon for Breakfast, pork chop for lunch, hamburger patty for dinner. It is not a hard diet to follow.

I know some patient's have had to go on a liquid diet Pre-OP. What Pre-Op diet did you have to do?

I'm on the Optifast range. 3 Optifast products a day (bar, dessert, shake or soup) plus 4 cups of low starch vegeatables and two serves of low starch fruit!

I was 98.1 this morning - just weighed myself (I never weigh at night/so close together) and I was down to 97.4.... AND THIS IS ONLY DAY ONE!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
