Advise and Suggestions Needed on Helping Est. WLC

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

My Dr. has recently started performing the Lap Band procedure. He has done 3 patients. He knows that I do a lot of research and is hopeful that I can help him with the establishment of the Clinic.

I would like to hear from you all on what you think would make a successful WLC. This is a Government facility, so there are no seminars because there is no need to promote (not sure if that is the purpose), but there is a need to educate. I would like to suggest that he make it mandatory that his patients are properly educated before he does this. Perhaps by having monthly or weekly classes to be attended pre-op (is that the same as the seminar?).

Please tell me what you think. I would like to print this thread out and show him.

Thank you.

After going through alot of pre-op testing and classes, I would say they made me jump through too many hoops. I think some basic pre-op testing and maybe one beginning informational seminar and then one appointment to review post-band eating would suffice, along with written information and instructions. I do alot of research on my own and already knew everything going into the program, though, so maybe I am biased against too much hoop jumping.

I think a general informational meeting PLUS a pre-op seminar are crucial. People should have at least two opportunities to ask questions, and absolutely be given a chance to ask questions of post-op patients. Doctors and nutritionists are all wonderful at telling bandsters what they should do, but only actual banded people can describe what it's like to live with the band.

As for pre-op testing, I think that has to depend on the patient's health. I had only minimal testing before surgery (other than what was required to establish my candidacy for surgery), while others do have to have a lot done. That's really a medical decision.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
