Does PBing only happen if you overindulge?

Recommended Posts

Hi Kids! (no matter what your age! :)

I had my first fill this week and although I feel pretty good after 1/2 cup of food..I've never felt the urge to PB or choke, etc. I've never "tested" the band to see how much I can eat. I don't really want to..but I figure most people do on their journey at some point---seems human and I'm sure I'll test it at some point--although it's not in my plans. I'm still in the uber-compliant phase.

So the fact that I've never had any PBing ---does that mean that I'm pretty loose in the band or does it reflect that I've not tested the band?

I'm confused...I read about people PBing and I can't figure out why it happens. Is it always related to overindulgence? To be honest, there were a couple of times I sort of ate mindlessly and didn't chew as well as I know I am supposed to and I didn't have any problems. (although I've only been on soft foods so far)

I've not had anything above 4-5.5 ounces at a sitting. I'm just too nervous to test it.

thanks in advance for helping me sort this out...

hugs,

Bandedkitten

Hi Kitty Kat :P

No, it's not always due to over indulgence... though it can be of course. It can also be due to the band being too full, or a swollen or infected stomach or eosophagus?, or simply because the band just doesn't suit some people and things don't go according to plan.

It's great you are still in the zone, I hope you stay there for a long time and be satisfied on half a cup.

I think when you progress to more solid food you will discover what the lack of a good chew can do. :D

Good luck with your journey.

If you're satisfied with 1/2 cup of food for several hours (at least 3, preferrably 4 or 5) you are doing well.

Restriction is a poor term for what we bandsters are supposed to feel. What you really want is appetite suppression.

You might benefit from reading Dr. Simpson's article "It's not about restriction".

Thanks for posting this link. I went and had a read... what a great article.

I think it should be handed out to every potential lap bander... what we are often told to expect is so different to this... BUT this is what makes sense.

So thanks again... food for thought!

You're welcome. I wasn't told these things either. I got the link from being a part of a yahoo group on banding called SmartBandsters. One of the moderators and frequent poster is, Jessie Ahroni, who is a nurse who's been banded 11 years, lost all her weight the first year and works in bariatrics. She also has a book out on banding.

Honestly I think it's a better support group than what my doctor offers... ssssshhhhhh. :)

re: "http://drsimpson.net/fills/Lap-band-eating/lap-band-not-restriction/lap-band-and-restriction.html" excellent link!!! Thanks....and he hits most of the major points we all need to know. PBing for me has happened far more frequently because of some 'Error of Eating' I committed in some variable of 'too much/too fast' rather than being just the type of food....although certain items predictably are most often culprits in a little slime. Dry stringy chicken unchewed very well....which violates the 'too much/too fast' Rule of Eating... PB for me can happen even on a one or two bite basis if I ignore my new eating habits. Most often if I'm too hungry and eat too fast, there it is. And if 'Sport Eating' rather than 'Satiety Satisfaction' I tend to find my attention wanders from actual eating to something else, old chomp-and-gulp may intervene producing PBs.

204 lbs lost! What an inspiration! And you are almost at goal! Super congrats! But just curious, why stop at weighing just under 200? Are you tall?

I haven't had any PBs, sliming or nausea at all either. I do burp more than I used to though, nothing productive though, just gas.

I think that it probably happens for a number of reasons, and I have heard that some just don't ever get them. I hope that you're one of them (and me too...)

Not all that tall, just average. I'm leaving some room for plastics to take off some weight.. and I don't agree with the BMI. I don't believe it's accurate for athletes (which I'm slowly becoming), those who've been obese for a number of years (our bones are heavier than the norm), or post-menopausal females.

If I were to go by the BMI, the most I could weigh to be "normal" would be 149. I think I'd look sick. I want a little bit of padding so I don't break a hip when I fall.. if I fall and surely I will sometime. :)

My goal is also a mental thing. If I make it too far away, it scares me. Right now it's set at 175 and when I reach that and stay for a while.. I'll reset it a little lower and see how it goes. My doctor has never given me a goal for some reason.. don't know why.

Thanks for the compliments!!

Any puking I have done has been from poor food choice, poor chewing, or simply not paying enough attention to my eating. Never overindulgence. If I am "full" I will hiccup but nothing productive

For me PB and being stuck/sliming are two very different things.

PB (productive burp) can happen "just because." MId-meal, mid-bite, mid-chew. Or even after I have finished the meal. Like a baby urps up a little bit of something unexpectedly. I burp and surprise! A mouthful of "stuff!"

Sliming and being stuck is entirely different. It is usually brought on by pilot error, but not always. Too big of a bite or not chewing well enough are the usual culprits. If that comes back up or I have to help it come back up, it is not usually associated with a burp or gas of any type. It also usually involves discomfort, a PB doesn't. A PB just happens. Perhaps a little feeling of gas that I am going to burp first, but not that rock in the chest, OMG I want to die, WHY DID I EAT THAT YOU STOOOPID FOOL, feeling.

I didn't experience my first stuck episode until after my second fill. I don't remember my first PB as they aren't that big of an event for me. Although I did have a PB the other night where I happened to be at the kitchen sink, DH passed by just as it happened. I burped, I spit, he looked. He says, "oh gross! Why did you do that?" I said, "uh, like I had a choice? Made you look! HA!" To which he responded that he is now blinded for life. He'll get over it. blink.gif

I so agree with your BMI quotes. In my avatar photo I was actually 190 and no one believed it. I am now at 175 and between a size 10 and 12. I'm 5'6" and swear I have lead for bones. I know I could shave off a few more pounds but the BMI index in the 140-something pound range would be almost impossible for me to attain without looking completely sick. Even when I was in he military I never made weight specs. They always had to do a BMI calculation and I passed every time, but going straight by the scale, no way. I now go by clothing size, not scale number. I'd like to see 20 more pounds go but I think that's all I can do. I've got an appointment with my doc next month to schedule a Tummy Tuck as I think there are several pounds of loose skin that is part of the problem. Everyone has to find their own happy weight. I think mine is about 155.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
