I have the esophagus testing on the 24th. Has anyone had any issues with this? Is it uncomfortable or painful at all? Does it require anethaesia? Are you in any pain afterwards?

Also, I have the blood work on the 29th. What are they looking for?

I'd love to hear what everyone else's experiences have been...

I did the EGD (?) back in the fall, it was fine. I didn't feel like anything even happened to my body/throat when I woke up. They do knock you out and my friend who did it the week before said they wake you up and make you swallow and something else. She remembered but I didn't. Neither one of us had pain or uncomfortable.

The blood work I just did was the same blood work you will do during your journey, they are checking all of your Vitamin levels in your blood. But I also did other bloodwork for my PCP clearance so they may include that or not. That bloodwork was checking glucose, thyroid, blood count, etc.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the info. I recently heard from someone else that the esphagus testing was actually the most unpleasant part of thier journey so far. This person wasn't knocked out for the procedure (I believe) and had to do a whole bunch of swallowing.

If anesthesia is an option...I'm taking it! It does NOT sound pleasant. As far as the bloodwork goes, I'm not worried, just curious is all :)

Anyone else had any other types of experiences?

Okay....had the test done on the 17th. It was a breeze. I was rolled into the room, they had me lie on my side and put wedges on the front and back of me. They put this piece in my mouth and taped it in place. And thats all that I remember until I woke up in the recovery area. Throat is numb. But you have some gas pains in your stomache from them putting gas in you. You will have lots of burping and some tooting involved. But from what I have been told nothing compared to having a colonoscapy(?), Got up got dressed and went home. You are told to relax and do nothing for 24 hours.

Hope this helps to ease your mind!!

Thanks Jlynn!! Glad to hear that it wasn't bad. The only thing I'm worried about it my case, is that the dr doesn't just want to see my esophagus, he wants to see how I swallow. So during the test we are required to do a series of sips of Water. I don't hink i'll be able to do the test the way you did. :(

Either way I'm going to look on the bright side because horrible or not, this test is the final step before getting banded on July 5th!! I'm so excited to finally move forward that i'm not going to let the anxiety of this get in my way. :D

Thank again for the info!! When are you getting banded? (sorry if you already told me the date)

I don't have a date yet. I am still going through the series of requirements that my doctor wants done. I have a doctors appointment on the 27th and am hoping I will get some idea then. But I am staying positive and looking forward to a new and improved LIFE.

I had an endoscopy last week and had anethaesia. The test actually is about 5 minutes. Your throat might be a little sore afterwads but otherwise you will be fine. As for blood work, I haven't had mine yet. Good Luck!

I also had the endoscopy with anesthesia. The only 'side' effect was that my left side was sore for a few days (only noticeable when you laughed, coughed, etc). You lay on your side when it's done so I assume that I just tensed up the whole time. Other than that - you're fine (or I was).

Other tests I had: psych exam, ekg and then full cardio stress test and test for sleep apnea.

It sounds like you went to the OBAND center right?

I don't think so - I went to a local hospital.

I just had an esophagram, and all that required was for me to lay on my side on the xray table and drink a bunch of the scrumptious barium while they xrayed. It took all of maaybe 10 minutes, tops.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
