Go figure the only one I like has rice in it. Its called bbq eel ( I know sounds weird). But I can only eat 2 pieces anyways. Does anybody know the nutrition side of sushi? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much. I appreciate the website.

I guess its good in one way but high in carbs due to the rice.

I need to try and find another one that is better, I mean higher in Protein but lower in carbs.

The rice is definitely the carb problem. Get it sashimi-style instead though and you cut out most of them. Unagi (bbq eel) also tends to come with a sweet sauce on them that probably adds more, but it's negligible compared to the rice.

I LOVE sushi, but I've had the habit of wolfing it down in large quantities, so I'm hoping that post-banding (one week from today!) I'll be able to appreciate a small plate of sashimi even more.

will that be raw or cooked (please explain sashimi style).

oh and after banding you will find that you won't be wolfing anything done in a hurry, or you will be in big trouble. LOL

Sashimi is raw but its just fish or fish on pieces of rice - rather than rolls. I tend to buy sashimi packs if I'm out and about and need to buy lunch and I just pull the fish off the rice and leave probably 2/3 of the rice behind becuase its just too filling. Otherwise, because of the rice, I think sushi's like anything - fine in moderation but dont have it on a day you also have bread AND Pasta kinda thing. I'm not a low carber but its pretty stodgy and gets stuck for me anyway.

Not quite, Jachut.

Sashimi has no rice at all. You just get slices of whatever fish or seafood, arranged nicely and ready to eat.

But technically, sashimi isn't really sushi at all, since "sushi" literally means "seasoned rice" and that component must be present to be sushi. It comes in three types: maki sushi (also known as "rolls"), nigiri sushi (where the seafood is laid over a small rectangle of rice, sometimes held by a strip of nori [seaweed]), and temaki (where the rice and other contents are held in a cone made of nori). To my knowledge all sushi restaurants sell sashimi, however.

Whether it is raw or cooked depends on the item. BBQ eel is always cooked (hence the BBQ part of the name!), as is most crab and shrimp and octopus, unless specified as raw. Things like tuna, salmon or squid are either raw or just seared on the outside before slicing.

Dang, now I'm craving sushi!

Sashimi is great. Pure Protein. You can't beat it. I try to eat it a couple times a week. For some nutritional info on both Sushi and Sashimi check out the link below:

http://www.sushifaq.com/sushi-calories.htm

I also like to get Hand Rolls with out the rice. I have never had a Sushi place not take that request and a Spicy Scallop Hand Roll is one of my favorite things to eat.

Explore Sushi and Japanese food in general.

I suggest finding a good Izakaya restaurant near you. It is Japanese Small Plates (Kinda like tapas) and it is a great way to explore the tastes of that culture.

I try to eat low carb, but I do allow myself an occaisional (every 2 weeks) trip to my favorite japanese restaurant for sushi. I normally get a snow crab roll and a shrimp appetizer. I split the appetizer with my husband and then usally can only eat 1/2 - 3/4 of the roll. I love japanese food and I'm glad I was able to find a way to enjoy it from time to time.

You can get sushi made with brown rice also. It doesn't taste too bad either =)

I used to order rolls and sushi but now just order sashimi. I also try to limit tuna because I eat so much fish in general that I'm sure my head is exploding with the mercury. A piece of eel is fine, but think of it more like a treat than a staple. For me these days (my band is on the loose side) some miso Soup, three pieces of salmon sashimi, two pieced of tuna and one yellowtail and some edamame make up a good meal.

Theee-o I'll try and order a handroll without the rice. Good idea. Spicy tuna here I come!

I love, love, love sushi and it would be my preferred type of food to eat if I go out. Alas that doesn't happen often....but when I do eat it I'm in heaven!

Does ordering a "hand roll" mean no rice? That sounds like a fantastic idea, I had no idea it could be done. Can someone explain exactly how a roll stays together without the rice? Thanks :)

Just beware of sushi rice if you are well restricted. Can't count how many times I've been stuck on it, but love it so much I won't stop eating it.

I don't do low carb, so rice is on my menu. But the sticky rice can be a big issue. As messy as it sounds (and is) I break the big rolls up and eat them in shreds. I don't get the full mix of flavors that way, but i don't get get stuck as often either!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
