Post op complications - not losing weight

Recommended Posts

Surgery date 5/31/11

1. Band came overfilled and stomach swelled shut - all Fluid was taken out next day in office. No restriction at all now.

2. Allergic to pain medicine

3. Allergic to whey Protein - lived off egg drop Soup and Boost for over a week.

Already on mushy foods but have not lost any weight since surgery and regain of dehydration.

Do you think the MD will fill my band at post op appt? Is no weight loss normal with no restriction after surgery??? I had lost 100lbs on my own but my body wouldn't lose anymore so my body is already used to eating 1200 calories or less a day...

just curious if anyone else experienced similar issues and what happened and if sometime soon I’ll actually lose weight? Feeling discouraged.

When is your post op appointment? If you've been losing for a while (congrats by the way, that's awesome!) you're not going to have that drastic drop that most of us have. You said it yourself, your body is already used to 1200 calories a day, and it's now getting over the trauma of the surgery. I imagined my body yelling "what the HELL is going on here?!?!" after surgery. Yours is doing the same and even though your diet is super strict right now, your body has no idea what to do.

Most patients do not get a fill until about 6 weeks post-op. Having had the Fluid that was put in at surgery removed, I'd say no, you'll not get a fill for a while.

Your body went through a great trauma from the surgery. You are two weeks post-op. Your body needs time to heal. Weight loss will come. Have patience. If you have been eating 1200 calories a day, and are continuing to do so as you progress your post-op diet then you might be on a plateau. You might have to up your exercise or work with a nutritionist to find the right balance.

Lap Band is not a malabsorptive procedure. You will still process the calories as you always have.

Have you tried soy or hemp Protein? I have to use those, not whey. Most people don't have any fill in there band until weeks after surgery, it's called bandster hell. Sometimes it takes several fills to get reaction. But be patient it will come.

Thanks - post op went well - he was pleased that i maintained my weight i guess. I go back in two weeks for my first fill since i have nothing in there. so we shall see.

my best friend just found her sweet spot and it's been 3 years to find it... so learning to be patient isn't easy for me...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
