Port Infection And Lap Band Removal

Recommended Posts

Congrats on your impressive weight loss, Green Eyez! I can't say that I personally experienced any of the symptoms that you're talking about, but hopefully another member can share some insight. Everyone seems to have different quirky experiences with these darn things. My infected port was removed in July and reinstalled in October. The July removal and recovery wasn't pleasant, and I was unsure about having a new one put in after what I went through, but I finally seem to be back on track. Finally feeling restriction and the weight is coming off -- slowly, only about a pound or two per week -- but my appetite is definitely reduced. It seems like I went through hell and back to get here, but I can finally say that I can recommend this procedure, EVEN with the infection. Good luck to you!!

Well... things didn't go as I planned and I'm an now without the LapBand. I went in Friday to have my port replaced. I was scheduled to have a scope, but really didn't think it would show erosion because I was sure my abdominal pain was gynecological. I thought I would go in, have the scope, have my port replaced, and be home that afternoon... I was wrong. They found a fairly substantial erosion and I immediately was prepped for Band removal. I had it removed Friday afternoon. Ended up with pretty serious pneumonia, nearly sent to ICU, and was in the hospital 5 days on constant oxygen and IV antibiotics (they also found a small abscess at the erosion site) . It's been a LONG road, a lot of pain, but I don't regret doing it. Doctor said we can talk about replacing it, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to travel down that road again. I have quite a while to think about it.

Hi Jenn - it's been a while since I've been on these boards, but I wondered how you were doing and if you decided to have the band reinstalled. It's such a tough call, I know.

I was banded September 2010, I've lost 130lbs!!! smile.png Unfortunately, had my infected port removed a week ago :'( now being treated with high dose antibiotics, and have this awesome "gun shot" wound next to my belly bottom. Any how, I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing the pains that I am post port removal? I've been sore up under my ribs with sharp pains into my left shoulder (with deep inhalation) for a week! My doctor says its because they have to yank on the tubing quite hard to detach the port, and it may have adhered to some tissues, nerves etc that are now mad as hell at reckon havoc on me! Anyone else? Or am I a baby?

Wondering if you recovered completely?? Dont think you8 were a baby - I got mkine removed and sometimes cry like one....lol - also have the pain in left shoulder - it is gas...but not sure when it will be gone?? awould like to hear from you...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
