Post op vomiting, lots of mucous and foam

Recommended Posts

Hello

My husband had the band put in mon 6/6/11, he passed the swallow test prior to being discharged from the hospital. I had to bring him to the ER that evening bc he wasn't keeping anything down. Then the next 3 days he had continuous vomiting, it was all foam and mucous. Then on friday the dr did a revision and it looked promising he was gonna be discharged the following day. Well he never made it home he is still in the hospital 1 week post band not able to even keep in saliva. He wants the band out ASAP. Anybody else experience this? and if so, how long did it last and what caused it.

What kind of revision was done? This sounds awful. You will be in my thoughts and prayers...........while I watch for an update.

They removed some fat from around the stomach and removed the stitches from around the band. And he still has continuous vomiting.

Is it possible that the vomiting is from the meds they have him on? A lot of people react badly to morphine based drugs and also to anaesthesia.

Did the Dr put Fluid in the band? If he did then he probably needs to take it out as for many people it causes problems at this stage of the process.Usually if people have problems at this stage it is because of post op swelling combined with fill being put in too early. The solution to that is to remove the fill which is a really simple procedure.

Does your Dr have a lot of experience with the band? Has he had problems such as this before? It would seem strange that the stitches around the band were removed unless they had been put in incorrectly to start with. I also haven't heard of anyone having fat removed as part of the band placement procedure. That is not to say it doesn't happen.

Hope it gets sorted out soon .

I have never heard of this, but the mucous and saliva make it sound as though the band is too tight. I leads me to think that perhaps the doctor used a band that was two small (the manufacturers have two sizes) or put Fluid in during the original surgery (some surgeons do that).

I, too, have never heard of removing the stitches or fat around the stomach as a means of loosening things up. I have heard of unbuckling the band and leaving it open for a while until swelling has gone down.

I can't say as I blame your husband for wanting it out pronto.

Hope he feels better soon.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
