Adding flavor to my shakes

Recommended Posts

You can go here to read more about the flavor drops and/or purchase them. http://capellaflavordrops.com/

Netrition.com also carries them.

One of my Hobbies that I retired from, but may some day go back to is: Cakes, Chocolates, and Homemade Fudge.

The flavors that you are describing are at any Cake n candy Nook. You will get a large Variety to choose from also.

The prices are a lot cheaper too, and CALORIE FREE !

You can make your coffee flavored if you want.

I'm not surprised to see that company's have jumped for telling people that they can flavor their shakes, ETC., with there product.

Look up a Cake and Candy Shop/ or someone that sells chocolate Morsels. You should be able to get a couple ounce bottle for a decent price, and a lot to choose from.

If your in Michigan Saint Clair Shores has the Cake and Candy Cupboard, Heindrichs is in Centerline, Michigan.

Check your phone book for what's in your area.

Lorann is another company, you have to find a shop that has a variety of these products for a dollar or dollar and a half a bottle.

Any GIBRALTOR TRADE CENTERS OUT THERE ! They carry it too.

I own my own bakery business so I have a wide variety of flavors that I can add to my shakes but for someone that doesn't have access to a large variety like I do extracts are good to use and like 54Shirley said Lorann oils are good to use for flavors. You can find a pretty good variety and can usually find them at your local Hobby Lobby and some grocery stores carry them if they have a Wilton baking section. There is a really good book out called "Drink This, Not That" that has good recipes in it that you can also change to meet your (our) needs. I just picked up a smoothie book at TJMAXX for $3.00 that has some really good recipes that I customize with my Protein powder!

re: "Any ideas? " maybe I'm missing something here, but why not just throw in a couple of diced or blended real strawberries if you want the most intense flavor? I've never gotten that super-intense flavor out of the big cosmetically appealing tennis ball sized versions, it's the little thumbnail sized berries that seem to have the real flavor.

Jack: your not missing anything at all. In Fact if you can puree those strawberries, or chunk them up (NOT TO BIG) That's the freshest way to do it.

But you can't add real chocolate to a chocolate shake it's to fattening, and I know you know that too.So for a plain vanilla shake you can really change

your flavor with extracts, or oils for flavor. I prefer the S.F.Pudding in the box on my cottage cheese once in a while.

Since I am in this for life,,,, I want to find different things that I can do for myself, that's low in calories, and High in Protein, but I won't get tired of them this way.

I don't do this all the time, but when I want to change things.... I know I can. It works for me.

We have a Hobby Lobby here but they only have vanilla, strawberry and lemon flavors, that's it. Our grocery stores carry vanilla, rum, lemon, strawberry and coconut.

Not much variety so I find the Capella drops simpler.

We're coming into prime strawberry season here. I'm unable to eat enough of them raw to encounter any calorie or blood sugar issues. And while many disagree, I simply can not stand strawberry any other way. There's something to the fresh berry not present in other incarnations IMHO.

Blueberry vines, raspberry and blackberry bushes and the Holy Gooseberries are plentiful on my little gardening acre and are my main indulgences.

As far as other flavors go, I'm a fan of'plain vanilla' with various flavoring herbs as cinnamon, nutmeg, and a wide assortment of others infrequently.

I don't care for chocolate and could go another 30 years without it except it's nearly as prevalent as oxygen.

I prefer stevia if I need to sweeten something. most of the SF products have something in them I don't care for either. I'm not a pudding or especially 'Jello anything' kind of guy, since under the guise of a 50 year wedding party the relatives forced me to endure lime Jello with bologna strips and 'fruit cocktail' many years ago....but that's another story.

Life was pretty tough in preOp days as a Diabetic with some hidden allergy reactions. I just remain cautious.

I personally wouldn't look into the nestle syrups (haven't looked at the labels in a while though, so things may have changed) but I still don't think those are too good for you. I've read a lot of people on here add SF Jello or pudding mix to their shakes so you may want to try that. The pudding mixes make it thicker and creamier, but I haven't tried the Jello flavors. So consider a SF strawberry jello and remember a little goes a long way with that so just try a little at a time. :)

Hi!

I love the strawberry flavor of the Carnation Instant Breakfast!!! I like to add that to my Protein powder (vanilla or unflavored) to make it taste more like a "real" strawberry milkshake.

However, I've only been able to find the CIB assorted packets that have 2 strawberry packets and a variety of others (I like all the others too except for dark chocolate)....anyway, my stores don't sell just a container of the strawberry flavor (only milk chocolate)....

SO my question is.....

Can I add Nestle Quik strawberry powder or Syrup to my vanilla or unflavored Protein to make it more tasty? My stores don't carry the SF Torani syrups in strawberry, otherwise I'd just buy that. They don't even carry regular strawberry Torani syrup, but while I was perusing that aisle last night, right near the Torani syrups were the chocolate milk mixes, hot cocoa, etc. and that's what got me thinking about adding the strawberry Nestle Quik when I want a strawberry flavor. My daugther wouldn't drink plain white milk when she was a little younger but would happily guzzle it when we added the "magic" syrup (strawberry nestle quik) to make it into "princess milk"....(whatever works to avoid a power struggle with a 2-year-old!)

I know the Nestle Quik has lots of sugar and probably calories, but I'm talking maybe using a teaspoon or so, just to perk up the flavor.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Thanks for all the info and advice.

I know that once I am post-op, it will be a week at least before I can add any fruit to my Protein drinks, so I was looking for something to get me through the "no fruit in my drinks" period. Between now and then, I will continue to add strawberries when they are nice and fresh-looking at the store...I also have some frozen berries that I add when I don't have fresh. Wish I could grow my own fruit and veggie garden but it's too dang hot and dry in Texas!!! Ugh!!!

I also hadn't thought of adding Jello Gelatin to the drinks....I've heard of adding dry pudding mix (will be trying that tomorrow, vanilla with SF butterscotch!!) but didn't even think I could do the same with gelatin....That will be my next attempt!!

And I just might also have to get some of those flavor drops....someone mentioned toasted marshmallow and I started drooling!!!! I bet I won't be allowed to ever eat marshmallows again but would LOVE to be able to add that to some Protein Drinks, etc.!!!!

And Jack, since you mentioned it, now I want to know about the lime Jello and bologna incident!!!! :)

Thanks everyone!! I'm getting closer to being banded!!! Can't wait!!!

By flavor drops I assume you're talking about extracts? I love to use extracts! It takes a VERY small amount, no calories, no sugar and very flavorful. :) I hope the Jello works for flavoring your drinks! I'm not allowed fruit for at least 6-9 months and I sure do miss it. But I trust my dr and know he's doing what he has found works best. :)

Isn't that Good, and Easy to make... Also good for the whole Family. Serve it like Fluff, or Ice Cream. It's that good.

Glad you liked it, Shirley.

Yeah I do! I usually buy the extracts from Walmart they seem to have the most variety (around here).

My favorites are banana, Cherry, Cinnamon (adding real cinnamon tastes gritty), coconut, and root beer! I usually add these to tea or vanilla Protein powder. The cherry, banana and coconut are good with chocolate Protein Powder also. The root beer is AMAZING! I blend the root beer with vanilla Protein Powder and ice in my magic bullet and it's just like a rootbeer float! YUM!

My absolute favorite 2 (only together) is peppermint extract with chocolate extract. I miss the peppermint mocha at starbucks and this sure does do the trick! There's no fat or calories in extracts but you get LOTS of flavor. Some of them do take a little bit to acquire the taste, but overall, it's better than no flavor. (Everyone is different, so if some of the above flavors you don't like normally, I probably wouldn't suggest them. )

Thanks for the advice about the extracts.....when you get them from WM, are they in like the baking section with the regular food extracts? Like Adams brand in the brown bottle with white label?

I will have to add that to my shopping list!!! Root beer sounds DELISH!!! I wonder how the cherry tastes when added to SF crystal light cherry limeade???? (I think I bought the Target brand of cherry limeade "crystal light" and I like it!):)

Thanks!

Yes they're in the baking section with the other extracts (where you find the vanilla flavoring) I'm not sure about the brand you're referring to but I think most extracts taste the same. I bought the raspberry lemonade crystal light and that's really yummy! (They gave that to me at the hospital so I got some after I came home too). I'm sure the cherry would be great in it for a little extra burst of flavor! Mmmm making me thirsty! But I just ate, still have another 45 minutes till liquids again haha.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
