Post op day 5 and still pain

Recommended Posts

Ok I'm post opt day 5 and im still having what I thought were gas pains. The pain comes in spasms right in almost the center of my back closer to my right lower shoulder blade, also across my chest. I have not been able to sleep because as soon as I lay down it starts. I get a little relief in the mornings by drinking some hot tea. I'm starting to feel like this is never going to stop. I have tried all gas remedies to no avail. Has anyone else experienced this? It does feel like if I could get a good burp it would relieve the pressure but I can't burp. I know were not supposed to used carbonated drinks but in starting to get desperate. PLEASE HELP! With any suggestions. Thank.

Are you getting up and walking? This also helps with gas. Walk as much as you can.

Everyone is different on how fast the Gas leaves their body so I would not be surprised if you still have some lurking around. Walking, staying hydrated, and doing range of motion exercises with your arms and shoulders (windmills and rolling your shoulders) really is the best way to get rid of gas pains.

I will tell you about my issue I had this past week. I was on my 4th day post op and was so uncomfortable. I kept blaming it on gas pains and I was having bad pains in my ribs upon breathing in/out. I called my Dr's office just to let them know what was going on and they asked me to come in so they could look at the band under the x-ray and possibly get an unfill. The saline the Surgeon put in when testing my band was 1 cc and there was air in there also. All of that got removed. I kid you not, I felt instant relief in my stomach and all of my muscle tightness went away. The nurse said I was WAY TOO TIGHT. I still have the rib pains just not as bad and I was told I would need a rib adjustment for that. So, I just try to tell everyone now to use their instinct on whether it is true gas pain or they believe it may be something else. It doesn't hurt to call the Dr. to find out.

I'm 9 days post-op and it does get more tolerable and better each and every day. Hang in there!

It's definitely normal to still be in pain at this point.

I am also having the same types of pain, banded on the 8th. I don't even want to drink anything, when I do it feels like there is a big air bubble keeping the liquid from going down. Today is Sunday, I'll call my doctor Monday morning. Hopefully this isn't how I'm going to feel forever.

THIS IS MY FIRST DAY OF COMFORT SINCE MAY 6TH . IT WAS VERY COMFORTABLE . I WAS IN AND OUT OF THE HOSPITAL LIKE 3 TIMES NOT KNOWING WHAT WAS GOING ON . IT TURNED OUT TO BE THAT THEY HAD TO PUMP AIR INTO MY BODY SO THEY WOULD NOT DAMAGE MY SPLEEN . IT DOES GO AWAY ,BUT IT IS VERY PAINFUL .... I KNOW IT SOUNDS FUNNY BUT GET ON ALL FOURS AND RUB YOUR BELLY AND ALL THAT GAS WILL BE RELEASED !!!!GOOD LUCK

I was banded on the same day as you, and my gas pains are pretty much gone, but burping is a little difficult still. I've been walking A LOT. I have found that getting up and down out of a chair quickly several times kind of jiggles it loose, or bending over and bracing myself on the counter. Hope that helps somewhat. Hope you feel better soon.

Do you still have your gallbladder? It sounds like a gallstone attack.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
