I am researching about hiatal hernia. I am planning on having the lap band surgery and have not seen my surgeon yet. I have a Hiatal hernia. Will that interfere with the lap band surgery?

Most likely they will repair it while they are in there. I don't think you can have one with the band. I think it would cause problems. I had one (did not know prior) and my doc repaired it while he was in there

In our clinical practice we have seen that a lot of patients have a hiatal hernia and they don't even know about it. They might have had vague symptoms, such as occasional GERD or mild nausea from time to time, but were never diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. Most LapBand surgeons will closely look for a hiatal hernia in the first part of the surgery, and if you have one fix it at that time. Don't worry, it won't interfere with your surgery.

I had surgery a week and a half ago and they fixed my hiatal hernia and my friend also had surgery and she did not have to have that fixed and our recoveries have been no different.

Yep, what everyone's saying is true. When I went in for my band, they read off the 'title' of the procedure, and it was 'placement of lap band, etc etc with possible hiatal hernia repair.' I think it's something they look for just in case. I didn't have one, but I hear that it's fairly common, and they will repair it.

I had one and didn't even know it. They repaired at the time the band was placed.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
