seriously11 0 Posted June 10, 2011 I am researching about hiatal hernia. I am planning on having the lap band surgery and have not seen my surgeon yet. I have a Hiatal hernia. Will that interfere with the lap band surgery?
Jess55 97 Posted June 10, 2011 Most likely they will repair it while they are in there. I don't think you can have one with the band. I think it would cause problems. I had one (did not know prior) and my doc repaired it while he was in there

DrHekier 0 Posted June 10, 2011 In our clinical practice we have seen that a lot of patients have a hiatal hernia and they don't even know about it. They might have had vague symptoms, such as occasional GERD or mild nausea from time to time, but were never diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. Most LapBand surgeons will closely look for a hiatal hernia in the first part of the surgery, and if you have one fix it at that time. Don't worry, it won't interfere with your surgery. shutterbug6 0 Posted June 10, 2011 I had surgery a week and a half ago and they fixed my hiatal hernia and my friend also had surgery and she did not have to have that fixed and our recoveries have been no different.
roziecakes 20 Posted June 10, 2011 Yep, what everyone's saying is true. When I went in for my band, they read off the 'title' of the procedure, and it was 'placement of lap band, etc etc with possible hiatal hernia repair.' I think it's something they look for just in case. I didn't have one, but I hear that it's fairly common, and they will repair it.
sandy1 1 Posted June 11, 2011 I had one and didn't even know it. They repaired at the time the band was placed.
