I am scheduled to go to orientation on 6/23 with the Bariatric Group at Ellis Hospital. Has anyone had experience with this group? Good or bad? I have been contemplating this for several years and finally decided to go for it.

Yup! I am a patient of Dr. P at Ellis Hospital's Bariatric Center.

I reached my goal weight and am indebted to Dr. P for all his help and support.

I definitely give Ellis a thumbs-up! They also handle all the surgery scheduling, insurance nonsense, etc., so all I had to do was literally just show up for all the pre-op, surgery, and follow-up visits. They made it really easy.

the first step would be talking with your primary care providor. He or She would need to write a letter of medical neccesity for you to have the surgery. The next step would be contacting your insurance company to see what there requirements are for the surgery, and what groups they work with. My insurance is requiring a center of excellence which Ellis hospital is. I beleive AMC is as well and I could of gone there. My primary care doctor who I have been with for 15 years thought I would do better with the program at Ellis then the one at Albany Med.

I worked with this group in surgery at Ellis for over three years. My doctor is Dr. Clarke, and he is wonderful. Very thorough and careful. Good luck!

Well just an update, my husband and I both have orientation on August 4th. They told me I am just above the BMI line or 40 and we shall see. I have the letter of necessity coming from our doctor and I called the insurance and they told me that the doctor has to submit the request. So now we are just waiting for August 4th. Is anyone else going on that day?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
