Other ways to get Protein in....

Recommended Posts

I was banded a week ago tomorrow....I have basically only eaten Carnation Breakfast, jell-o, pudding and a little Soup. I have tried putting Protein powder in my drinks and it literally made me sick. I am not sure if I should waut a few days and try it again or what are some other options for trying to get the ptotein in when I am so freshly banded??

Thanks!!!

On week two I could eat Peanut Butter, have ricotta cheese (LF) in my Soup, and here are some other options (keep in mind you won't be able to have all these yet-but most! :

Fish

  • Most fish fillets or steaks are about 22 grams of Protein for 3 ½ oz (100 grams) of cooked fish, or 6 grams per ounce
  • Tuna, 6 oz can - 40 grams of Protein (use 3oz fo 20 grams)

eggs and Dairy

  • Egg, large - 6 grams protein
  • Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams
  • Cottage cheese, ½ cup - 15 grams
  • Yogurt, 1 cup – usually 8-12 grams, check label
  • Soft cheeses (Mozzarella, Brie, Camembert) – 6 grams per oz
  • Medium cheeses (Cheddar, Swiss) – 7 or 8 grams per oz
  • Hard cheeses (Parmesan) – 10 grams per oz

Beans (including soy)

  • Tofu, ½ cup 20 grams protein
  • Tofu, 1 oz, 2.3 grams
  • Soy milk, 1 cup - 6 -10 grams
  • Most Beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans
  • Soy beans, ½ cup cooked – 14 grams protein
  • Split peas, ½ cup cooked – 8 grams

Nuts and Seeds

  • Peanut butter, 2 Tablespoons - 8 grams protein
  • Almonds, ¼ cup – 8 grams
  • Peanuts, ¼ cup – 9 grams
  • Cashews, ¼ cup – 5 grams
  • Pecans, ¼ cup – 2.5 grams
  • Sunflower seeds, ¼ cup – 6 grams
  • pumpkin seeds, ¼ cup – 8 grams
  • Flax seeds – ¼ cup – 8 grams

I'd try some other Protein sources. Lots of people have to g from brand to brand to get one they like. If you buy from a GNC store you can return any flavors you don't like, even if they're opened. Or you can go online and order samples of different drinks to try before you spend a ton on them. I know vitalady.com does samples- not sure what other sites do.

You might want to try ready to drink Protein Shakes they tend to taste better. I quite like Premier brand which you can find at costco chocolate and vanilla. Also Muscle Milk light it pretty good. Make sure to get the light version though the regular is high in calories and fat.

The first week I had trouble with anything with flavor (including my Protein shakes). My dr gave me a medicine for nausea and that helped more than anything! I tried waiting a few days but it was getting worse. If you can drink the Protein shakes, mix them with a very small amount of liquid instead of the traditional 8 oz of Water just so you can get it down. If you're still on pureed like I was at that time, pureed chicken is really good with some taco seasoning and cheese. (Cheese & chicken have a good amount of protein). Someone listed above the amounts of Protein so you can refer to that for more info :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
