Congrats on not eating the steak. I am praying for will power to make it through to my surgery without cheating. I have 8 days. I feel like the little train the could... I keep telling myself, "I think I can, I think I can."

Jenny just reminded me that MUCH earlier in the thread a few of us put together a shopping list for post-surgery. Thought it might be helpful to post again, plus some of you may have suggestions to add to it!

Food:

sugar free popsicles

sugar free Jello

Protein Shakes

fruit juice/milk/crystal light

Soup

Medical:

Gas X Strips

Scar cream or cocoa butter

Ice packs

Heating Pad

Lip balm

General:

drinking straws (depending on what your doctor says, some say to use them, some say to avoid them!)

hand blender

new set of knives (nice and sharp to cut up food!)

Book, either "Band Wagon" or "Is Lap Band Surgery for Me?" (not sure yet)

small rubbermaid containers to help portion out food

food scale

First day of pre-op diet and it kinda sucks. Every time I got hungry I started heading for foods I can't have. I did a pretty good job of eating up what I can't have over the last few weeks, but not completely. Maybe I should just give it away or throw it out. Went to the grocery store and man there was a lot of stuff there I wanted to buy! But, I'm determined to stick with it best I can. I may cheat a little and have a little barbeque sauce with my plain white chicken that I'm allowed. Official diet says I can have mustard and hot sauce, but please, who eats those on chicken???

How is everyone else doing on their pre-ops? I heard days 3-4 are the hardest, it's when your body goes into ketosis and some people feel downright ILL, like a mild flu.

Shauna

Day 1 was really hard. Mine diet is looser then yours. I was told to follow Adkins style diet. The hard part for me is giving up the sugar. We can do this together hang in there. Not long and we have our surgery.

12 hours until I head to the hospital. I've been doing fine all day until now. And now, I'm suddenly incredibly anxious. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm doing this so I can live for a long, long time and watch my baby girl grow up.

You can do it!!!! I'll be thinking of you tomorrow (and the group of bandsters). It isn't an easy road, but we were all brought together for a reason. We'll be healthier and happier!!! See you on the post-op side! :)

You can do it lizzy! Of course you are anxious, you are giving birth to a new life (yours) and we know how scary that is! You will be just fine, I promise!

I also started my two-week diet. My doctor called me this morning and told me to start this morning because the turnaround for my insurance company would take less than a week for an approval. Therefore, I started my Protein Shake for Breakfast. I had a chicken Soup flavored shake. I am using Unjury. I must admit it was tasty. For lunch, I had Progresso soup chicken and Beans and for dinner, I had chicken and a spoon of mash potatoes. I know the mash potatoes were a no but I had to make sure the potatoes didn’t need any salt ( for the kids) hahahaha. I was so hungry when I got home I wanted to eat everything in the house. I have found a way to curb my hunger. I am now eating pickles between meals and for some reason the pickles ease the blow. I know I’m crazy but it works. I will be seeing my doctor tomorrow and hopefully have a surgery date by this time next week. I think a lot of my hunger is related to PMS this week so the pickle thing might be a fluke.

Greetings from bandland!!!

Surgery went very well! No complications or suprises. I was very sore all day yesterday. No gas pains whatsoever though! The incisions are the worst part for me. Praise God for pain killers. I went in a little late, sometime around noon, and was home in bed by 6pm. So far it just feels like I did a million crunches and situps. I am a belly sleeper and I'm having a hard time staying asleep on my back.

Right now its 3am where I am, I can't sleep because I'm still just so shocked that the big day has come and gone. I'm am very blessed that I feel so good (with the help of meds) :D

How are my fellow 5th banders? Prays and thoughts for the 6th banders!! Hope your experience is as uneventful as mine has been.

Yippie I made the list. What a great feeling, to be smack dab in the middle of a group of people on the same journey. I am suddenly filled with Graditude.

I am still learning how to use this whole thing. How do you make the weight progress chart thingy where you see your bmi and weight?

Day two of liquid diet. If I hear one more story of people saying how they know someone who it didn't work for and they blew right up again, I am going to scream. Its surprising how people can go to the negative. Man I am just staying in the positive.

Is anyone who is on Pre op diet shooting for a certain number of Protein grams.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
