Thanks, Nechama! I certainly think so. :) And she's the best reason I've ever had for improving my life, my health, my eating, my home--everything. I never knew I could love another person so completely (I know, I know--virtually every mother feels that way. But I spent so many years living just for myself that it's something of a revelation to me still! )

She's beautiful!

Yay! In a way, not looking forward to pre-op, but know I will probably lose a few pounds so looking forward to that!

Lizzy, your daughter is wonderful! I'm also motivated by my 7 YO son...I took him to Legoland over Memorial Day weekend and was in pain most of the day because these poor feet and knees aren't meant to be carrying 60-70 extra pounds! I'm very fine/slender boned so this weight just kills me. I'm looking forward to taking him to Disneyland in a year and not being in pain the whole time.

Good news...I have gone from being able to walk 2 miles on my treadmill a week ago (with considerable pain) to walking 3.2 miles last night. I walked slow though, only 2.5 miles per hour. I've got to get up to 13 miles at 3.3 miles per hour by January to make my half-marathon...surely it will get easier as the weight comes off. Meanwhile I am limping around today...going to get some better fitting athletic shoes this weekend so hopefully that will help.

I am still pigging out though...got a bad case of "last supper syndrome". Plus I wanted to clear all the food out of my house to prepare for the pre and post-op diets. Figured it will be easier to not have all the food around. I'm hitting all my favorite restaurants with foods that may not go down easy after banding, or have high carbs (my nutritionist wants us to stay on a high-protein diet as long as we are trying to lose).

Take care everyone, and hang in there pre-oppies!

Shauna

Now I am not sure about things happening for a reason, but how is it that I try Hulu for the first time and come across a Scientific American video about surgical weight loss?

I had 3 days of massive pigouts and carb gorging. Then it was like a switch went off - this is how I got heavy! But I had to have food poisoning and crazy heartburn to drive the point home. This is day 3 of my good diet again and I do feel better. Each meal is a major struggle though. I want to get rice, fries, Pasta, chips, and lots of bread. It is sometimes quite hard for me to overcome the temptation and I've had some carbs. I'm seeing more and more that this battle is more in my head than in my stomach. Veggies and salad and grilled lean meat ARE satisfying but my silly head still believes that I need mega yummy carbs at meals.

Anyone else mourning loss of Outback cheesy fries, bread and honey butter? Hope I can have again one day. Thank u for letting me vent!

Hey There,

Just looking for any July 2011 banders. I just started my process, but as that I am "self-pay", I am on a fast track to surgery. Although, not terribly obese (bmi 34), I am using lap band surgery as a tool for continued success after loosing weight. I have always been able to join a program(diet or exercise or prescription) and loose weight.....I've done it several times with several different programs (not a good thing), but I always gain the weight back and more. Now that I am in my 40s, it is harder to loose and faster to come back. No more, I say! I want to be heathy in my future - family history/genetics dictates that I will/can be using a walker or wheel chair from degenerative bones and joints, heart disease, diabetes. I am trying to steer clear of that but still keep seeing myself heading in that direction, so now is the time for further action. Although apprehensive about going under, I am reading all the good things about the lap band procedure and am hoping that it is just a little more than the tubiligation and endemetrial ablasion that I had done last year. At least, I am thinking of it that way, so as to not scare myself too badly!

Hi. Everyone. I am a self pay too. I will be banded on July 14th. I am excited to have found this group. There is a lot of good information. I am nervous and a little worried about being nausea after surgery. I have had surgery before and have terrible vomiting. It was good to see one person had surgery in the morning and was posting on here in the afternoon. I have a question. I have to travel 6 hours to have the surgery. Should I stay in that city overnight or should I let my husband drive us back home after surgery.

Thanks,

Denise

Denise, everyone feels different after surgery so we can't know how you will feel. But, that being said I would definitely spend the night to see how you are feeling.

When you get ready to travel back home be sure to plan ahead. You will need plenty of Water and some Protein drinks and maybe a couple of little Jello cups. Then, when you get ready to drive home be sure to allow time in the drive to stop and walk every hour. I live 45 minutes from the clinic and we had to stop for me to walk due to horrible gas pains. Also, be sure to stay ahead of the pain by taking the pain medicines before you are in bad pain on the trip.

I have to travel 6 hours to have the surgery. Should I stay in that city overnight or should I let my husband drive us back home after surgery.

Thanks,

Denise

I don't know what to tell you on when to go home, but I can wholeheartedly recommend that you bring a pillow to press against your belly on the drive home. Learned how essential that is from reading posts here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
