Recommended Posts

I had surgery on Jan 28th , I went trough my insurance BCBS , the checks have been rolling in for my WLS place , check here , check there , then I started to notice the bigger checks , 13,000 , 8,0000, then wow a check for 31,000 , I was like dang , so me and the wife started doing the math , my ins has payed 72,000 for my WLS journey so far , we just couldn't believe it , so far I have not payed anything , I know one thing if they try to come after me for ins not paying them enough , I will be yelling

That's crazy. If you self pay it's less than $20K. No wonder insurance premiums are so dang high!

The total cost of my surgery was $22,000 and we had to pay 20% of that. Fun fun fun.

They paid 85% I think; my total cost was no more than $700.

I had a copay of $250! I don't think my insurance paid anywhere near $72,000. I think they only paid like 16 or $18000. Not positive though. Kind of sucks for my insurance because like 2 months before my surgery my company switched to Oxford, now 5 months after my surgery my company switched back to Empire BCBS.

Initial bill of 47k was sent to my insurance. Hospital forgot to include condition code and payment was denied. I am keeping my fingers x-ed hopping hospital will resubmit all needed info back to insurance so I would not need to pay :-/

I have blue cross blue shield also and they covered 90 %. All I had to come up with out of pocket was $1000.

Maybe I didn't say it right , how much did your ins pay for your WLS , not how much you payed out , or they payed 80 and you payed 20 , the cost of your surgery they billed your ins , like I said so far my ins has payed 72,000 for my surgery , just wondering if other people are seeing that much money spent for the WLS

I paid $20.

Out of pocket rate was about $16k a the time, IIRC.

Negotiated rate paid out about $7k.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
