Lump in throat when I eat

Recommended Posts

Please tell me this feeling goes away... I am 16 days post-op and when i eat no matter how much or how little, I feel like I have a lump in my throat that the food can't get past. I'm on mostly mushy food now and it's uncomfortable for me to eat. Does this have to do with my hiatal hernia repair? Does it go away? Anyone else have this problem?

Also the scale hasn't moved in a week!! I'm only getting about 800 calories a day! Shouldn't I still be losing something?

That is what bandsters call "Restriction"

You are still post-op, no fills yet. But when you band is right you will have to learn to eat the correct foods, chew, small swallows, etc. Force it and you will get stuck, pain, and perhaps some damage. Learn to work with it, not against it.

The restriction feeling will change somewhat, may not be as severe provided your band is not too tight, but restriction is what it's all about!

Oh, also, 16 days post-op......forget the scale. Don't get hung up on it. You are still healing from the surgery, takes at least 4 weeks. Then your dr. will start adjusting the band.

I see from other posts that eating too few calories can inhibit weight loss the same as overeating - this is something i will struggle with as i'm an "extreme" person meaning all or nothing - overeat or undereat never "just right" i will need to really concentrate on that after banding july 5!

This will pass I had this as well. I am 7 weeks out. I have no fill. I had this for weeks. It will pass try drinking warm items in the am only. Don't eat food till after noon. This is what kinda helped me. It is just a process. I agree with the reply its restriction I couldn't understand this a few weeks ago. Now that I am past it and down 22 pounds I am affraid to get a fill and go back to that swallowing issue. So I incorporate will power and just placement of the band as my restriction. I don't want a fill I am just not emotionally ready to deal with additional issues with a fill.

This stage is not about losing weight-it's about recovering!! Any weight loss should be considered a bonus! Your body is healing and adjusting to the new way of eating. The lump in your throat sinply means you drank too fat or too much at once or ate without chewing or ate to much too fast...slow down and listen to your body's signal. When you feel that sensation coming on you need to slow down or stop. I know when I drink something fast I getthe feeling. Good luck to you!

As for the "lump". I'm thinking it may have something to do with the hiatal hernia repair. I had that feeling too for the first 2-3 weeks, I felt like there was something in my throat and I would swallow a few times and it seemed to go away for a bit.

As for losing weight, the first 6 weeks are about healing, don't worry about the scale. Some people cant lose on to few calories also. I lost week one, then I fluctuated with the scale until week 5 when I started eating normally and got back up to 1200 calories. So that is completely normal.

I'm wondering if your surgeon put Fluid in your band at the time of surgery. If he did, perhaps it is a bit too much. It shouldn't hurt to eat. Give them a call and find out. If he did, ask to have some removed.

best wishes.

I had that feeling too...it went away after a few weeks. Personally I think its probably due to swelling. I had no hernias or anything else repaired .

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
