Post op pain and swelling

Recommended Posts

Can you please let me know if anyone had a stabbing pain and lots of swelling around their port? My stomach is so swollen that I have lost 20 lbs but can't fit my presurgery clothes. I have been back to the doctor and they all comment how swollen I still am and they claim the pain in my port area is from where it is attached to me. I've tried to look up signs / symptoms of infection, and anything else I can think of it might be. Please let me know if this is normal.

My stomach is swollen too! I lost 14 pounds but my pants are snug-I even had to unzip some. I still have some soreness-I think the stiches are skrinking. Have you tried ice packs on the area? Pain killers?

Ice it and be really careful about lifting, bending and twisting. It'll pass!

Yes, I live on pain killers. 2 weeks post op and am still using Motrin (as prescribed) and Tylenol around the clock. I am miserable and want this thing out of me. I cannot keep living with this intense pain.

I'm not trying to scare you, but I was told absolutely NO ibuprofen (motrin) for a while after this surgery due to irritation in the stomach. You may want to speak with your dr about other pain relievers that are not NSAIDS. (I've been on Vicodin for the past 2 weeks and it does help as well as zofran for nausea).

Ok, I'm really glad to hear that other people are having pain at the port sight (well not glad but comforted to know I'm not alone). My surgery was about 2 weeks ago and I feel great except when I bend over or sit for too long I start to get pain along my port site (which is under my left rib). I keep forgetting I had surgery and I am very worred that I have done something to dislodge, move, unstich my port. I had the band put in in 2005 but it eroded through the stomach so I ahd to have it remeoved. So now I am super scared that everythign I do will lead to a problem.

About how long does the port site/stomach pain when I bend over last?

Any ideas about how tokeep the pain down?

I am aware of the Motrin issues, but I discussed this with my surgeon (who is actually who placed me on the Motrin because of how inflamed I am). I am to take it until I go back in July unless the pain stops. I am still taking Motrin and Tylenol around the clock for pain or it takes my breathe away. This pain usually lasts 3-10 minutes.

I asked my surgeon at my last visit about NSAIDs and he said the rule is for gastric bypass patients not for lap band. So he has no problem with me taking them. But definitely do what your surgeon says

Thanks again everyone. I thought I would post an update for you all:

I was back at the doctor today. TRICARE called to check up on me and I started telling her what was going on. She insisted this is not normal and called the dr. office herself. I had an appt this afternoon with a new Dr. I have not seen before there. He was very nice. He still thinks the pain I am experiencing is the port, but he sent me for a CT scan (which was terrible, by the way – I just got home) to rule out bleeding and appendicitis. He is fairly sure it is a hematoma behind the port on top of the muscle caused by bleeding during surgery. I’ll get the results to that tomorrow.

Thank you so much for being so supportive. Have a great evening.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
