SkinnyInside=) 5 Posted June 3, 2011 I'm terrified !! I just looked up my bmi and 48.5 ! Does this mean that my insurance and surgeon would prefer Gastric bypass rather the band !? It said I was morbidly obese , Or will this make it easier to get approved ?
CTMommy22 1 Posted June 3, 2011 My BMI was arround there too, I think if you BMI is over 40 it makes it a little easier to get approved...thats what my surgeon said
Cindy C 150 Posted June 3, 2011 I started out with a BMI of 47.8. Now it's 26.4 I had no problem getting BCBS to approve me. In fact it took less than a month! My employer switched to them on 5/1. I found out that they covered lapband so I made an appt for my consultation on 5/15 and had surgery on 6/10!

I just have my heart set on the band!! I see my PCP tomorrow and my surgeon next week. Hopefully ill be okay and everything moves right along =)
vickyd 24 Posted June 3, 2011 I started with a BMI over 50 and other than the nutritionist asking if I had considered the sleeve (which my insurance wouldn't pay for) I was never discouraged from getting a lapband. My BMI is now under 40 (no longer morbidly obese) so the band is working for me.

I have a new baby at home and the recovery time is so much longer than the band !!
stateofzen 46 Posted June 3, 2011 I had a 48 starting BMI and I was approved by insurance (BCBS) in 15 minutes. No kidding-- program coordinator called and said my paperwork was complete and she was going to submit it, then 15 minutes called back to say I was approved My PCP did tell me bypass might be better for me, but my surgeon thought the band would work and since that's what i wanted, that's what I got. TKW 501 Posted June 3, 2011 Oh you skinny little people.... I started at 68. My Dr. didn't even blink when I said I wanted the band instead of by-pass. So happy with my choice. Good luck to you!
