Jammy 24 Posted June 2, 2011 I'm on my 3rd day of my 14 day pre-op diet. I have been feeling offensive with my breath and have had a nasty taste in my mouth for days. Finally I broke down and went to the gift shop at work and got some sugar free gum. What a relief. I'm also trying to hold off on my last shake of the day because I won't be able to have dinner until much later tonight. The gum is definitely helping fend off the hunger. Anyone else have any remedies to this that they want to share?

NJGirl32 43 Posted June 2, 2011 Gum is a no-no. I remember a few days post op I bought some and I got so worried that I would accidently swallow it and it would cover the opening to my stomach!!! If you never swallow your gum I guess it shouldn't be a problem-but I am not taking the chance.
brbm6 6 Posted June 2, 2011 I was told by my surgeon to never chew gum. It can clog the hole that leads to your pouch if swallowed. I now use sugar free mints.
jennifer1 180 Posted June 2, 2011 i chewed gum before and after surgery. my surgeon never told me not to. i find it had that a piece of gum that's been chewed could get stuck, the hole isnt' that small..i mean food passes through it. i also used sugar free mints. i know the day of surgery i couldnt chew gum cuz i causes the stomach to produce gastric juices in preparation for digesting whatever it thinks you about to eat. NJGirl32 43 Posted June 3, 2011 food breaks down with stomache acids and I don't think gum would. I also think I read that gum causes unnecesary air to be swallowed. Just be careful...post surgery I am required to break up all my pills and I can't even take a capsule without breaking it apart.
AlienBandit 10 Posted June 3, 2011 I would die if I couldnt have gum. My doctor never told me no. I was once even overfilled a bit and accidentally swallowed gum and nothing bad happened. I had an endoscope check a while after and the gum wasn't there. I have never actually talked to someone who has, had a surgery because of gum just stories from other people who get the stories from their docs.
mindylou 1 Posted June 3, 2011 know what you mean about the funk mouth. I think it is from the Protein Drinks that I am using. I'm on day 9 of my liquid diet. Make sure that when you brush your teeth you are also brushing your tongue. The Protein drinks really stick to your tongue. Since I have been brushing my tongue throughly my mouth feels sooo much better. Good Luck to you
Jammy 24 Posted June 3, 2011 I guess I hadn't stressed that I'm not banded yet. 11 days to go!! I'm still in my pre-op days. Yeah, it was weird. Yesterday when I looked in the mirror after work in the car, I noticed that it looked like I had stuff in my teeth, when I hadn't eaten anything all day but the Protein Shakes, and I know I had brushed and flossed my teeth in the morning. It looked pretty gross! I am def going to grab some of the strips. I have less of a funk mouth feeling today, and the only difference is that I only used my Unjury Protein Powder and none of the premixed shakes. Maybe they're really the culprit of the yuck-mouth!! 54Shirley 105 Posted June 5, 2011 Once you are banded, either don't chew gum, and try tic tacs instead. Also ask your surgeon about it.
Rachel412 116 Posted June 5, 2011 Gum isn't a problem with my doctor, either. They recommend it to help give your mouth something to do when you want to eat.

All those pills times 4! So at my one week check up, my doc said I could cut the bigger ones in half, and take the smaller ones whole. Just take one at a time. It has worked out just fine. My tune may change after my fist fill!
