Could it be Acid Reflux?

Recommended Posts

I had Lapband surgery on April 15 and while I've lost 20 lbs. so far post-surgery, it hasn't been an easy journey. I actually had to have 3 ccs of Fluid and 2 of air removed several days after surgery because it was too tight and I was getting dehydrated. I couldn't get any Fluid down without severe pain in my chest.

I feel much better since then, and some days I eat and everything is fine. On other days I eat and my mouth fills with saliva and I have to throw up. Usually I'll feel better after this, but sometimes, like today, I just keep puking and coughing over and over which is painful and burns my throat. I've got an appointment this week to have my first possible fill, so I can tell my doctor my problems then.

The thing is that I don't know how I could possibly get a fill when I'm having such a hard time getting food down as it is. I've heard that many people get acid reflux as a result of the surgery. I don't feel like I have heartburn, but could that be why I'm throwing up? I'm so sick of my husband saying that it's probably because I'm eating too fast or not chewing enough because I'm not and I do.

Has anyone else gone through this without even having had a fill? I really need some advise from those of you who have gone through this. It's so discouraging because before the surgery I thought people puked because they ate too much, I didn't realize it was because they were choking on their food! If I knew that, I don't know if I would have gone through this. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I did, but it sucks to go through this.

Thanks!

Yes, sounds like you are having some reflux. You probably have a little swelling caused from the throwing up. Go back on liquids for 2 or 3 days. Try to stick with cold liquids for the most part. Cold helps reduce swelling.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
