:) Dear friends from Queensland. What on earth is Vegemite? I saw it as a recommendation from a list of foods that came to me from my Dr. office and they got this list from Australia. It talks of Joules and things like Vegemite spread on bread. Is it like p-nut butter? Please forgive my ignorance, but I am truly interested!

Hahahaha, brace yourself you will be absolutely horrified. If you're not brought up on it the look of it and the smell is enough to scare you away before you even taste it.

Have you ever had Promite or Marmite, its similar but they're way inferior.

Its a thick black yeast spread. Completely black. It's kind of salty would be the best way to describe it, but its choc full of B Vitamins.

I like it spread v-e-r-y thinly on buttered toast and I love it with butter on crackers too. But you dont eat a big spoonful of it or you'll probably blow the top of your head off.

It looks and smells waaaay worse than it tastes, its actually very nice. But to Aussies it's a cultural icon so we're game, to everyone else its very scary looking.

It is Australian and the worse possible thing in the world....God awful tasting. In Australia they spread it on toast and bisquits just as we do jelly or jam. The comparison stops there. I have never, ever tasted anything worse in my entire life. Humans shouldn't eat that stuff. I hope someone didn't tell you to get this stuff!! Horrid.......:heh:

Vegemite is a 'concentrated yeast extract' spread that creates a love or hate reaction in those who try it. It is a bit of an Australian icon really and I am one of the folks who love a bit of it on toast!

Vegemite is black and is usually spread thinly on toast or fresh bread. It tastes salty and is great with cheese in a sandwich. cheese and vegemite sandwiches are a bit of a lunchbox tradition at school! Some bakeries here bake scrolls with cheese and vegemite between the folds of bread - YUM!

There are similar products available such as Marmite and Promite but nothing tastes quite like Vegemite. It is very high in Vitamin B and is low carbohydrate and has some Protein.

In Aus, we're always entertined by newcomers to Vegemite who spread it like Peanut Butter on their toast... definitely NOT recommended!

Try it (but thinly)!

Now I keep singing that song from the 80's "I come from the land down under...and give me a vegimite sandwich" Men at Work? Someone help me!

Well it is small and microscopic...but it's bacteria. It's good stuff, just spread it very thin. I made the mistake of putting it on like Peanut Butter and I swear I was trying to wipe my tongue for hours.

Kathy, I think it is Men at Work.

I've never tried Vegimite, but I love Marmite. Spread thinly on a slice of toast, kissed with butter. But toast these days is pretty much a non-starter.

A friend from AU brought a jar of it with her to the States. As she skipped across the country, visiting all of her chat friends, she would introduce them to Vegemite. It is EXTREMELY salty! But I won't say that it was disgusting. Of course, being from Australia, I had to expose her to my DW's chicken Enchilada casserole.....Plenty of jalapenos in that dish. LMAO

OH thanks everyone! Now I want to taste it! I will find a way and I know that yeast is full of b complex. I too thought of the song about the Vegemite sandwich, What else would someone put on a Vegemite sandwich? Avocado or lettuce or lunch meat or what? Maybe tomatoes? I would appreciate knowing the ingredients for one. I guess its like caviar, salty black and best when used sparingly Ha!

I can send you a jar if you'd like? LOL. I love the stuff, but as others said, in very tiny amounts, like the tip edge of a butter knife, on toast with butter and then a slice of tasty cheese (bad me lol).

The kids here eat vegemite sandwiches with either just vegemite, or vegemite and butter usually. My husband likes it on his bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches. But I think for the most part, its a toast thing...

I've always enjoyed savoury foods more so than sweets, so making the transition from jam to Vegemite on toast when I moved here was quite easy for me.

Thanks Pavathi, I could probably find it on the internet and save you the postage, I sure appreciate it though! I am sort of in this mood to try just about anything new as I cant fall back on my old favorites, ahem..you know the naughty stuff. Well I have found out that I like lamb meat also! Its so tender it hasn't stuck yet! I also learned how to make stuffed grape leaves from a friend from Lebanon. I like them but my family isn't so sure about those. I also found out that I like hummus. I just cant have the pita bread. Anyone out there feel adventurous about food too?:biggrin1:

I loooooove lamb and it's also very Australian because we have so many sheep, we eat a lot of it here. We eat it probably twice a week but its horribly horribly expensive in Australia due to the drought.

I've eaten roast lamb, but I did get a little uncomfy when I tried to eat a little loin chop. Those are much tougher.

Well have to get to posting a few Aussie recipes, like a good pavlova or pumpkin scones!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
