Hi I am 52 New Grandma and looking into lap band. When I was 25 I was told that I had an ulcer. I took medication for a while. but realized if i stay away from certain foods i am fine. I do have acid reflux and keep my Tums close by. I want to loose weight so bad. I am tired of not being able to do the things i would like to do. I have a new Granddaughter, and there are so many things I want to do with her. I want to go to the beach and take my dog to the beach too. forget walking on the beach. I am 5'1" and weight 227. Last year I had a total knee replacement and because I have gained weight since then I'm still in pain. the Doctor told me before I had the surgery that I really needed to try and loose some weight. He said any would help. but the weight just gradually comes on. I guess I am going on and on. What my real question it

Does anybody have any input about being diagnosed the and ulcer, will i automatically be denied the lap band?

Joni, an ulcer never came up in my workup. I had an ulcer when I was younger but I have not had any real problems since then. I did have Gastric Reflux for years. This did not interfere with my banding on May 25, 2011. They found a large hernia which was repaired and possibly was causing the acid reflux.

So, I am saying you don't need to assume you will be turned down because of a past history. Good luck!

My insurance company required a pre-op EGD and my doctor found I had an ulcer. I never had a clue. I came out of the procedure and he said, "Why didn't you tell me about the ulcer?" I had no symptoms that I was aware of, probably mostly from ignoring the signs. Anyway, he treated my ulcer, repeated the EGD and verified that the ulcer was healed. He scheduled my surgery and the rest is history.

Bottomline, I don't think your previous ulcer history is going to be a problem. I still take prevacid daily, but don't have problems with reflux, unless my band is too tight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
