Medication after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So i'm on the count down to my surgery and i'm starting to think about what i'l need to have at home afterwards. There's so much stuff to think about so i was just wondering what you used for:

1. Pain killers, like over the counter stuff for a head ache.

2. Heart burn

3. Constipation/diahorra (seriously does this all happen and should i just have something in the house in case?

4. food for first few weeks, what did you eat?? What kind of Soups??

5. List of things to bring to the hospital.

IT would be great if you can say what you've took and what you would bring with you.

I am getting excited about starting my new life

Cheers

Ps: Just to say i live in Europe/Ireland, just for the names of medication as it can differ in USA.

I just had my surgery 1 week ago. I am still on the clear liquid phase. Diluted apple juice, diluted grape juice, Water, broths, sugarfree popcicles, sugarfree fruit pops, and Protein drinks not powders. I wore shorts and t shirt to hospital, then my wife took them home and brought me cleans ones Tuesday when I was discharged. As for pain killers, I had percocet ( used once ), liquid Tylenol, Prevacid and an anti nausea med. After Wednesday I didn't take anymore pain meds.Drinking all liquids didn't give me Constipation, just a watery stool. I go to the doc on June 6th and for my first post-op check up. One secert.............walk as much as you can. The fill your abdoman with CO2 and it hurt me like heck until I walked and got rid of it. Laying in bed is the worst thing you can do. Hope this helps you. Good Luck.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
