A lot of Dr's like to unfill before surgery as often anaesthesia causes nausea and possibly vomiting which could cause the band to slip.

I had an abdominal hysterectomy 3 weeks ago and was lucky as my Dr's did not require me to have an unfill. My band Dr didn't think it was necessary unless my anaesthetist required it and he was happy so long as I don't suffer with reflux which I don't. The only problem i had was that I was put on a light diet after surgery which consisted of Soup, sandwiches and jelly and icecream, It didn't matter how many times I tried explaining that sandwiches were not a light option for a person with a band it just didn't get through. I was abit tired of the Soup and jelly after a couple of days and was desperate for some proper food.

Good luck with your surgery, hope it all goes well.

I had a vaginal hysterectomy back in September. My Ob/Gyn said that the anesthesiologist required the band to be empty. Something about being able to get a tube down your throat if they need to.

Gall bladder out on April 20, and I didn't have to get an unfill. The doctor said as long as I was able to swallow a pill without cutting it up, he was fine with not unfilling my band. There has to be enough room to get a tube into your stomach if they need to. I only have around 4 ccs in a 14 cc band anyway.

I'm having a hysterectomy next Thursday, and I'm waiting to hear from my OB/GYN if she is going to require me to get an unfill. I'm hoping the answer is no, since I didn't have any problems on April 20.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
