can i drive myself to surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm having surgery next week (June 1st) and my husband is going to get the (4) kids out in the morning and then come to the hospital. Is there any reason why I can't drive myself to the hospital and get started on my own? My hospital (NYU) didn't say otherwise but on the lap band site it says someone needs to come with you . Are they not going to let me do the surgery without a person there? I realllllly can't have anyone come (until later).

Also, this is probably unrealistic, but is there any way I can go to my 7 year old son's school play the day after my surgery? I had my appendix and gall bladder out (separately) and did pretty well after those surgeries. Am I being unrealistic?

Please let me know what you think about these two issues!

my surgery center made sure someone was with me. I would call ahead just to be clear. I wouldnt want anything to hender your surgery. I didnt feel up to leaving the house until day 4. so that may be a bit soon, but everyone tolerates things differently. Best wishes on your upcoming surgery!:D

Though lap band surgery is minimally evasive it still is surgery and they probably wont proceed without someone there. As with ANY surgery there is always a risk associated with it. You will need to find a friend of some sort. Shoot pay someone if you have yo from off the streets :) (just joking on that) I am really spunky person but this surgery did put me down for about three days. Which totally surprised me. I missed my sons gf graduation :(

The surgicenter staff required that I have someone with me before and after the surgery. While I was in the OR, they told my husband that he could go grab a sandwich. Other facilities might differ in their policy.

I was pretty functional by day 3 post op. Everyone recovers at a different rate. Good luck on getting banded!

My husband was out of town when I had surgery. My sister-in-law dropped me off at the hospital and then was there to drive me home. They really care that you aren't planning on driving. As far as going somewhere the next night, I couldn't have done it --- but everyone is different. Good luck!

My friend dropped me off and then he came a few hours later and came inside and picked me up. You have to have someone. You will not be able to drive yourself after surgery.

There is no way you can drive home after surgery-absolutely no way. They wheel you out tothe front door and make sure someone is waiting for you before they release you. They won't even let you take a cab unless someone other than the cab driver is there-you will be sore and out of it a little.

If you drove tothe hospital who would drive your car home? It's so much better to have someone by your side throughout this process. When I git out of surgery I was so happy to see myhubby!

Forget the play-there will be lots of other things to go to-have someone record it and watch it together when you get home! This is about you and your health comes first. My nurse even advised me against going to malls the first few days because of the chance of picking up an infection.

First off YAY and congratulations!! I wish you the best!! Yes you can drive yourself there …. As long as you’re totally ok with hanging out and waiting for surgery by yourself! I had to wait about 60 mins before they got me into surgery… trust me I would’ve done it alone if I needed to, it has been worth it! But I’m sure you know that you will need to have someone drive you home!! J Good luck!!

Thanks for weighing in everyone!

I checked with my hospital (NYU) and they said it is okay to come in myself as long as my husband (or someone else) takes me home (which has always been the plan).

So. . . I think that is what I am going to do.

As far as my son's school play-I guess I will take it as it comes and not make any decisions until I have to. I do realize (from all the responses!) that it is unlikely that I will feel up to going.

2 more days to go. . .

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
