I was banded on May 20th and my recovery was ok. The one thing that is still quite painful is the pain that gets trapped in the left shoulder. How long have others had to deal with this! It is very uncomfortable and can be quite painful. I have been walking and chewing gas x like no body's business. I did notice yesterday when i hardly ate it ws much worse! How long have you guys had to deal with this? I tried a heating pad and it wasnt much help either!

I had it bad for i day, then it subsided over the next 2 days

Gas-X has no effect on this at all. Gas-x is for indigestion type discomfort. This gas is not in your stomach/digestive system. It has nothing to do with what you eat or don't eat/drink. It is air that they pump under your skin to inflate the abdominal cavity so the surgeon has room to work, without actually opening you up.

They do the best they can to get it all out before closing you up. But some are better than others.

Think of it as tiny air bubbles that slowly rise and come together in your left shoulder area until it finally dissipates. It hurt me the worse when it was trapped under my ribs. Could not take a deep breath.

My gas pain hasn't been horrible, but I do get pressure in my chest and under my ribs from if sometimes. The thing that has actually helped me the most is having my husband rub my back and pat it like I'm a newborn baby. I cam feel the gas moving up and out when he does this. I feel like a newborn baby too, because he's so proud every time I burp! lol.

I too was just banded on May 20. The most painful after effect was trapped gas in my left shoulder. It's been near unbearable since Friday until today. I finally feel it subsiding. So that took me a week. I did use a heating pad twice a day or more faithfully. I also called the nurse and she said it could take up to two weeks to go away. Hang in there!

Don't worry the gas pain will eventually go away:) I was banded for the second time on April 28th. My first band was put in 8 years ago and just recently discovered it had slipped! My doctor had to remove the old band and put in a new one. This surgery lasted 3 hours due to so much scar tissue build up from the first band. I had no gas pain my first time around but boy did I get some with this surgery. It lasted about 2 weeks and it went straight to the right shoulder and then it traveled to the left. I had to sleep upright with three pillows. It did finally go away and sleeping more comfortable. Hope you are feeling better by now.

Best wishes for a full recovery:)

I was banded on May 13th. Yes Friday the 13th! But I had a Good day for my surgery. Everything went well. On the 3rd day I had that same problem with the shoulder. It was an increadible pain and I remember the doctor explaining that I could probably happend. That I shouldn't be scared that is normal. I also tried warm compressions and it didn't help. So I tried cold pack everytime it hurt. It help me much better, But it did not go away quickly as I wanted. I do recommend to take your pain medication that the doctor prescribed you after your surgery. TAKE IT!:o When needed. it will help you! My pain went away the 4th day. So take meds... Try cold packs! It help me a little. Good luck

Yikes, that pain is the worst. For me it felt like a pinched nerve in my shoulder/neck and unfortunately it lasted several days. I remember one thing that helped with sleep/etc was to use one of those curved airplane pillows that fit around your neck. It did double-duty-- heated the area that was bothering me and gave my head some extra support to help me sleep while sitting.

I agree mine felt like pinch nerve too, that's what I thought it was anyway lol now that I read ur comments I think it must have been the gas. Very painful but this morning I just slept on my left with pillow under the shoulder and it seems to have subsided for now. Hope it doesn't come back. It's been 21hrs since surgery or should I say my journey. Love to all

I agree with other replys that massage and gentle patting on back and shoulders (like a baby) seems to help. I was banded 2.5 years ago and never had that issue. My wife was banded in January of this year and the shoulder pain was terrible for her. It finally went away after we were rear ended on icy roads (however created many more problems, whiplash etc.) so I don't recommend that technique.

I was banded on May 20th and my recovery was ok. The one thing that is still quite painful is the pain that gets trapped in the left shoulder. How long have others had to deal with this! Had to share this new news with you. I went to work today (not a desk job) from being off a week and having been banded May 20. Anyway, my shoulder was acting crazy today! I was near tears a few times. So I called the nurse, again, learned a new valuable piece of info. While it is our shoulder that hurts, the gas is trapped under the diaphragm and there is a nerve there that is connected to the shoulder. So! the nurse tells me to use the heating pad on my abdomen!!! I'm doing it now, (yes I am releasing gas...sorry tmi but true). If you try it, let me know if it helps you. I will be trying this until my shoulder stops hurting!! :)

Glad to hear the pain is better now. I had some gas pains at about 10 days after my surgery but since then all has been good!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
