Any other over 50 yr old Lap Banders?

Recommended Posts

I am 54 and would love to have the lap band surgery. I actually pursued it almost 2 years ago. Jumped through all the hoops and all my surgeon & I were waiting on was the final okay from the insurance company. Two weeks before I thought I would be having surgery, they sent a letter denying me because they felt my health issues related to obesity could be treated without surgery. By then I was eating better & exercising (as recommended by my surgeon) and had lost 30 lbs, and was feeling better psychologically. Instead of appealing the decision, I let it drop, thinking I could do the weight loss on my own. I have regretted it ever since. I wish I would have appealed it and argued with them til the end. I have maintained my 30 lb weight loss but in the last 1 1/2 years, haven't lost any more. Starting April 1st, my insurance company no longer covers weight loss surgery. My only option is to pay out of pocket. Not a cheap venture but something I am seriously considering because I don't want to waste the rest of my life regretting it. It is scary to face surgery, but I figure the fear is easier than the way I feel every day when I look in the mirror. Good luck.

It sounds like you know what you want. You will find a way to do it. Don't give up.

I'm getting banded on June 21st and was wondering if there are any others who are over 50 and have had the Lap Band process. My doctor said I didn't need to be on any special diet before my surgery, but I have been eating healthier anyway due to husbands heart problems. I know my road will be different from most due to leg nerve damage and back problems. Any tips anyone could pass on to me? I would love to hear from you. I'm excited and scared.

I have some of the same concerns. I too have some back problems and severe hip bursitis. Did anyone with any of these issues get any relief after weight loss after the Lap Band process?

I will be 51 in July, hopefully I will be finished "jumping through the hoops" by then and have a scheduled surgery date. Good luck on yours. Tara

I am 55 years old and was banded yesterday. Still in recovery mode but doing OK. I have a long way to go but really looking forward to being out of pain (joint) and possibly get my type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure under control. Would love to meet others who are going through this process and hopefully find some tips and tricks to use.

I am 53 yrs old and way banded on May 18th. Doing well. I think it is a positive thing for me. I don't think age matters.

I'm over 50 too and was banded 6 months ago. It's the best thing I've ever done for myself! I lost about 12 pounds before surgery and about 44 since. Some days are easier than others and the first 6 weeks are tough! Hang in there and you will see the rewards! I would highly recommend the following website for great food ideas: www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com

Good luck with your journey!

[i am 56, 57 in Dec and was banded on June 3rd. Today is day 5 post-op and I am doing very well except for numbness above right knee and upper leg. Increases during sleep, lots of tingling needles, etc. Calf muscles in both legs are sore but improving. Numbness and calf muscles thing began on day 2 of post-op and I have read in forums that this is not uncommon and will go away in few days/weeks.

Waiting on the swelling to diminish and incisions to heal as quickly as possible. Considering everything, I am glad I choose the band and am looking forward to this journey and getting to be where I am the healthiest as possible.

I just turned 54 and I am getting banded on 6/16/11. Like you, I am nervous and scared, but so very excited to get back into a healthier life style than I have been living. Today I go in for my pre-op surgical meeting and diet. I think the other part is that I worry about failure. I have yo yo dieted for 10 years and now I am at a point that I need to lose 50 lbs instead of that 10 - 20 lbs. Good luck to you! You are obviously not in this alone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
