Help Finding a Moisturizer for My Brother

Recommended Posts

So, my younger brother has had really bad acne for a few years now. After trying every option available to him, his doctors came to the conclusion that the only option he had left was to start taking Accutane. This Friday he will have been taking it for two weeks. Since he started taking it, his skin has become extremely dry and flaky. He's tried a number of moisturizers and all of them cause his face to burn so badly that he has to wash them off.

So, what I'm asking is if anyone has any suggestions of a moisturizer he could use that won't cause his skin to burn? I've read a little bit about jojoba oil, but I can't find enough information about it online to know if it's the right thing for him to use, and some of the information on one site contradicts information found on another site, as is customary with the internet.

So, if anyone has any advice or suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I'd stay away from any kind of oil product while battling cystic acne, which I assume he has if he's on accutane. You want to look for something more like a lotion or gel but that is gentle and moisturizing. Here are some suggestions:

Cetaphil lotion (you can get it at CVS, Walgreen, Target, etc)

Burt's Bees Natural Acne Solutions Daily Moisturizing Lotion

Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel - his dermatologist may carry this line of products. This is made with hyaluronic acid - a really good gel hydrator.

Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 15 or Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer Sensitive Skin. SPF is really important on accutane, as the skin is really susceptible to burning.

Hi, I two have a skin problem and use Cetaphil Gentle cleansing bar. Great stuff for Dry Sensitive Skin. This is even used on Baby's. You can get this from any CVS or most food store's. Check out the web site and you can down load coupons that you can use on the product. At CVS if you buy something and don't like it bring it back and you will get your money back. He has nothing to loose. I wish him well.

Have him go to a salon that supplies Dermalogica so that he can get Face Mapped (like Ulta). A certified skin therapist would be able to help him out with a few products made with natural ingredients. Hope this helps!!! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
