PORTABLE BAND FRIENDLY FOODS???

Recommended Posts

Ok, folks, this is a very strange request. I found out I have been accepted to start Med School in August. The school is a Caribbean med school and I will be living on an Island for periods of 4 months at a time. Students who are down there say that food is expensive on the island and so they often have friends / family ship food down to them. My question is, if I were to do this, what might be some light weight, non perishable, band friendly foods? I am thinking to college days when Ramen Noodles were the craze. Obviously Ramen will not be band friendly. What might be some ramen-type foods that I could ship? Has anyone gone on a mission trip or cruise and could recommend something like this? What do people who pack lunches bring?

Since writing this, I have come up with: Muscle Milk Light Protein Powder, oatmeal packets, grits packets, dried pinto Beans, Cereal? , powdered milk. I can prob get fruit cheap on the island because they grow some there. Bananas are supposed to be cheap.

First of all, congratulations on getting accepted to Medical School! :D

In addition to the things you already mentioned, my suggestions would be cans or pouches of tuna, chicken and roast beef, cans of turkey chili, Soup, fat free refried Beans, canned veggies, Protein bars, nuts, beef or turkey jerkey and dried fruit.< /p>

Hope that helps!

Thanks!

Med school has always been a dream of mine. I started the application process prior to getting the band, but I think that getting it has helped me increase my confidence. Also, it will be easier to go through the stress of all of it without an extra 80 lbs stuck to my body!

I have considered doing bariatric medicine, but I really do not want to go through the general surgery residency.

Congratulations! I think just having the experience you've had with weight and weightless will make you a more upstanding and helpful doctor. FYI, they make instant retried Beans. They are flakes and you add Water. Canned chicken and tuna I think ate great idea.

Thanks all! I am also sort of worried about the possibility of getting "stuck" while down there. I am assuming there are no band docs on the island. I haven't gotten permanently stuck *knock on wood* so far, but it seems to happen to most everyone at some point. I will have to talk about this with my doc, and come up with a contingency plan. In a worst case scenario, I would have to get a flight off the island and then back to INDY? at the cost of 2k dollars. That would be an expensive meal...

I might be wrong, but it seems to me that there should be someone at your medical school (an instructor perhaps) who could give you an unfill if you ran into an emergency situation. It might be worth checking in to...

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
